Could have been a 5 but the inside section was closed and the outdoor dining area wasn't really that great. The Pastel De Nata was incredible though

Pasteis de Nata is one of our favorite pastries after we visited Lisbon last September. We tried to find an authentic one in NYC and finally found a decent one here. The decor of Joey Bat Cafe is adorable and artsy with Portuguese white brick. The outdoor dining is currently available and the environment is good. The options on the menu were limited and we had 2 signature egg tarts and Bica Recheada. The egg tarts are tasty especially the creamy filling but the crust was thin, soft, slightly different from what we like. The Bica Racheada, which is pastry with savory bacon filling was surprisingly good. The portion is good for two people to share.

Delicious Portuguese egg tart in Manhattan. Little bar style cafe, seating is limited, so good for a quick bite. Egg tart, nata, is a bit eggy than the ones I had in Portugal, but still really great, crispy outer pastry and soft egg custard inside.

Delish pastries However, more effort needed to be sustainable. For example they could make more efforts to use less paper plates/eliminate plastic waste/offer compostable plastic straws/eliminate straws altogether.

Like what it said, the nata is a warm crème brûlée wrapped in a flaky croissant! The custard is very eggy with the perfect sweetness. However, I don’t understand they drizzled cinnamon power on top? Is it a Portugal style?

Heard this was an authentic Portuguese spot so wanted to check it out. They don’t let you go in the store due to an ongoing lawsuit which is bizarre but all good. The empanada type pastry was nicely done. They also had another beef pie with a flaky crust which had a different name. I wasn’t too impressed with the place. The meat pastries were good but not spectacular. Maybe they have other stuff that is better. 3 stars.

Not sure what happened at this location, but the Portugese Egg Tarts - Pastel De Nata were really substandard.( Joey Bats at the Night Market were great.) They will normally have a little bit of charring... but the six we got (placed into the box so we didn't see) were really burnt. Disappointed.

All I can say is that although Portugal is considered the home of the Portuguese tart, I hope this is not the best representative of it in New York. It is an extremely mediocre tart, and somewhat small, while also charging $4 per piece. The traditional flavor does somewhat resume a creme brulee as it is advertised, but it is a stunningly mediocre one. Not to say that it is bad, but it is an insult to my wallet when there are better pastries all around the city. I would honestly consider getting a Portuguese Egg Tart in nearby Chinatown next time for 1/2 the price while it also delivers a similar product.

Outdoor area where comedy happens almost every night in lower east side. Free to watch. The restaurant is a pickup window where they have surprisingly good sandwiches, espresso and they also carry hard seltzer. Mondays it's an interesting vibe.

Ordered a pack of 6 of the Original Pasteis de Nata, and one of the chocolate. For the chocolate one, expected the chocolate flavor to be incorporated with the custard for the tart, but instead it was a layer of chocolate and then topped with chocolate chips and cocoa powder. I highly recommend getting these desserts with an unsweetened coffee or latte as they are really sweet. They have a nice outdoor seating area with a huge screen TV, which was playing soccer last time I went. Compared to other Portuguese Tarts, I found this to be a little too sweet for my liking, but I really did enjoy the flaky dough. Beware, these are also very messy to consume.

The pastel de natas were super delicious, but we were second in line and waited 25 minutes for 1 package of pastries. The person taking orders was drinking a beer, the pastry chefs in the kitchen were drinking double shots of vodka and the shop owner was chilling with a beer at the next-door barber shop just watching us.

Natas are delicious if you get them made fresh. They’re not always fresh. Vibe is too try-hard. I could do without the attempts to be so hip. Iced coffee and iced latte were very subpar. Person taking orders was not very attentive and had trouble recalling orders she had *just* taken. (Maybe the music is too loud on her side of the counter.) Stick to the natas! Will give the sandwiches a try next visit.
