We booked this cruise 2 weeks before our departure to New York. It was to be our last night in NY and the highlight of our trip from the UK. We upgraded to the ‘first class dinner’ option on the ‘Bateaux’ at a cost of over $600, and were looking forward to dining at a window table, to our waiter service, our amuse bouche, 3 course meal with a cocktail, fine wines and open premium bar, and to be entertained by a live group.
On the evening in question we excitedly dressed up, got our taxi and arrived at Pier 61 to get our boarding passes. We handed over our ID and confirmation email and the staff behind the counter said that we were booked onto the ‘Spirit of New York’. Huh? Wait, what? Yeah, the ‘Bateaux’ is overbooked so now you’re on that boat instead. Shocked was an understatement. So, we get the same deal then? The waiter service, the premium bar, the entertainment? Nah, it’s more of a party boat, with a DJ and a buffet.
Still reeling from the shock we declined to board the ‘Spirit of New York’. It was not the evening we wanted, or booked, not to mention the huge difference in price. Staff could not care less and said the blame was with Viator and told us to sort it out with them. To avoid any comeback at a later time we phoned Viator there and then and got a full refund.
But this ruined our entire trip. We have used Viator before but unsure whether we will again. They had our contact details yet did not warn us of any possible changes to our booking.
My advice? Do not reserve this trip for any special/romantic occasion as there is no guarantee that your booking will be honoured.
Update: July 1: after emailing as requested below I have had ZERO response to my complaint. Customer service absolute rubbish.
