I recently took my bike to Trek Bicycle Milton Keynes due to shifting issues. Upon inspection, I received an email stating that my chain was "very badly worn out" to the extent that it was the worst they had seen in 25 years. The email also claimed that my cassette, chainring, and jockey wheels were beyond use and needed replacement, suggesting a total repair cost close to £400.
Surprised by this diagnosis, I spoke with the mechanic, who reiterated his concerns and refused to fit a new chain for safety reasons unless I agreed to the additional work. The manager backed up this stance when I escalated my concerns. Despite maintaining my bike meticulously and cleaning it after every ride, I was highly skeptical of their assessment.
I decided to pick up my bike and seek a second opinion. I took it to an independent cycle servicing shop, where they promptly replaced the chain (which I supplied) for £20. They informed me that my cassette, chainring, and jockey wheels were in perfect working order. Now my bike shifts flawlessly.
This experience has left me deeply disappointed in the service and advice provided by Trek Milton Keynes. It felt like unnecessary work was being pushed onto me, creating doubt about their integrity and approach. Based on my experience, I would urge others to consider seeking a second opinion before committing to costly repairs here.
