I'm in love with my new bike!! Thank you, Trek Georgetown (and specifically Chris, Dean, and Amrety) for all of your help getting this sweet new ride and for teaching me the ins and outs of owning a bike. I can't recommend this bike shop enough, especially to first-time buyers.
Highlights:
1. Affordable prices. I visited a number of bike shops that accepted the DC E-Bike Lottery voucher and this was the only one that had prices anywhere near the voucher amount. Other bike shops on the voucher list had only one or two models that fit the voucher requirements, and those they did have were usually well over the $1500 voucher amount. What I realized is that e-bikes usually cost a few thousand dollars, so although the voucher covers a lot of the cost, you *will* have to pay for some amount on top of the subsidy. Trek has big sales on older models: the 2023 FX 2 model was on sale from $2500 to $1500, which is what I bought. I paid out-of-pocket for tax, which was $200. To me, this was the best value proposition.
2. Super kind and helpful staff. I had an unfortunate experience at another DMV bike shop where a staff member literally scoffed when I told them my budget. At other bike shops in DC, when I told them I wanted to pay using a DC voucher, the staff didn't really give me many options or just seemed reluctant to help me. At Trek, the store manager, Chris, was friendly, enthusiastic and really generous with his time. Attitude matters a lot and his good spirits contributed to me feeling happy and excited for my new bike.
3. The employees are knowledgeable and patient. This was a big purchase for me, and as a first-time bike owner, I had a lot of questions: what kind of bike is best for my purposes? What size bike? What kind of lock should I get? How should I lock it for the best security in DC? Do different helmets have different safety ratings? Chris, Dean and Amrety all took their time to answer my many, many, many questions about bike safety, security and general maintenance.
4. The Trek experience = peace of mind. This is a comprehensive, thoughtful buying experience: the store is big, with a ton of different models for you to try. They had a similar model for me to try, and when I ordered another size, it arrived in just three days. Communication was clear and consistent throughout. There's a lot of security in the fact that there are so many Trek stores you get free Level 1 maintenance after 1 year.
5. My bike is fantastic. I haven't tried many bikes but I'm so in love with my bike < 3 < 3 It's light as a dream (38 lbs), sleek and streamlined, and has a lot of thoughtful features that make it ready to go for riding in the city (fenders, rack, bright headlight, rear light). If you're a long time Capital BikeShare user, then the weight of this bike will feel like a feather compared to the silver or black bikes. The motor has three settings that make it simple to climb hills. So excited to ride it around this spring and summer! Thanks Trek!
