I have spent hours in the water trying to get better by myself, I've had a range of coaching and looking at stuff all over Youtube and the internet to get better at surfing. It has bee such slow progress for me and, as a woman starting surfing late in life, it has been a real struggle. Surfing isnt like other sports, you need to get the technique right from the start in order to progress. I got the Amanzi online accelerated surf program and have been watching the easy short videos, practicing the land drills and took the plunge to start doing the carver skateboard drills on the street then on a ramp. My progress in the past few months since doing this has been mind blowing and i can see how much faster i have progressed compared to my friends who are still literally just stuck in the flats. The skateboarding was scarey at first for a 48 year old woman riding a mini mal, but by following the prescriptive instructions on the Amanzi program it actually was easy to get confident then take that into the water. I feel like i've learnt 5 years of surfing skills in just several months because the program was so focused on what i needed to know, without any of the other stuff which these online training programs often include. I'm even using the stuff i have learnt from Amanzi for when i coach my kids, their progress shows just a simple and clear the instructions and drills are - even my 5 year old gets it :)

Learning to surf is stressful. Battling through white water to get out, fighting currents to stay in place, identifying your status in the lineup and having to deal with the alphas, paddling into a looming set-all are just precursors to catching the wave. Then tunnel vision compresses your view, paddling blindly into a wave, feeling it smash behind you, struggling to pop-up and then the disappointment when the wave closes out in front of you because you’ve failed to build speed. Clayton, Amanzi’s founder, is able to break all these stressors down, and using vivid metaphors and studiously thought out explanations, extend these panicky milliseconds into relaxed interregnums in which you can luxuriantly enjoy your surfing.
