Vera Clinic seems really clean, nicely renovated with a massive fish tank, and they seem really hygienic as they don’t let you enter the clinic without stepping on a machine that covers your shoes with plastic wrap. You’re welcome to bring a guest as they have a cafe downstairs (not free) but please be aware that beside the cafeteria, they have another room for smoking/eating. Indoor smoking is common in Turkey. Anytime the door opens, the smell of smoke can come into the cafeteria so it can be uncomfortable if you’re sitting there for a long time. You’re better off waiting upstairs by the fish tank area.
The pick up and drop off services were impressive. I decided to get my hotel about 45 minutes away from their clinic to be closer to the tourist area but they still picked me up from the airport in a custom Mercedes van and took me for both my treatments (surgery & washing) not to mention, drop me back to the airport as well. Their was a slight discount given for not using their accommodation but if you’re just here for the transplant or ok with the commute, you’re welcome to use their accommodation. The hotels they offer will probably be better than the hotels in the tourist area but I enjoyed having everything in a walking distance instead.
Interview/Surgery Day:
I combined my interview day with my surgery day so that I can enjoy more time traveling totalling to a 2 day procedure including the washing. I was in Turkey for a week but did my procedure on the last couple days. I left one day extra just in case I had to visit the office for the third time which I didn’t have too of course. You’re also free to do your tourist activities after the surgery but you’d be on medications such as antibiotics and pain/swelling relief medications. To avoid accidental injuries, rain or simply a bird taking a crap on your head, I recommend doing your tourist activities before the surgery to minimize injuring your grafts.
During the Interview day, Dr Kazim did the drawings. He did my front hairline and crown area which is where I was losing most of my hair. They then proceeded with the blood tests and appointed a translator for me. I got their Economic Sapphire Package which is basically their highest package minus the hotel. Although the quote was given in USD, I made the payment for the procedure In Lira which equated to 2100 USD. Please keep in mind that they prefer cash although I paid with a credit card. They tried to charge me a 8% transaction fee which I avoided since they never told me about this charge prior to my surgery, otherwise I would have paid cash really.
Their website says that the procedure is painless using an NFI technique but that isn’t entirely true although it may depend on your pain tolerance. The local anesthesia was extremely painful, probably a bit less painful than getting a staple gun in your head but I wish they provided a stress ball because I must of squeeze their bed completely. However once this procedure was done, I couldn’t feel anything and the remainder of the surgery was painless including the PRP process once the transplant was completed. Please note that the surgery is mostly performed by the technician which is a common practice here. The doctor and your translator makes 2-3 visits to the operating room as well. The surgery took about 8 hours for me but that may depend on the amount of graphs that are pulled. For me it was 3550 graphs which they gave me a certificate for as well. My feedback for the clinic would be to install a tv inside the operating room, kind of like how you see inside dentist clinics because the operation was really long and boring!
Washing day:
A day after my surgery I was requested to come back into the same clinic for washing. This is where they apply a special gel to your transplanted area which you leave on for 15-30 minutes and then they wash it off for you. This procedure took about 1.5 hours but during this processes they also try to sell products to you to maintain faster hair growth and products that avoid hair thinning. I don’t know if these products were FDA approved, other than maybe minoxidil and finasteride, which may have side effects and withdrawal effects so I didn’t buy anything until I do further research but to each their own. I’m not saying they’re bad products, I just can’t review them if I haven’t used them. They do however give you the cleaning gel and cleaning foam which you must use for 10-14 days.
Post surgery:
Your grafts take about 7-10 days to fully heal, in that time I was asked to sleep on my back in a 45 degree angle. I didn’t get much rest to be honest as I’m used to sleeping on my side but it was for a greater cause of keeping my grafts protected. I was also requested to use a special gel & foam shampoo for the next 11-14 days which is provided from the clinic at no additional cost.
I went back to work in about 4 days after my surgery but taking a week off is probably smarter idea as long as you’re not embarrassed of the way your hair looks. In about 3 weeks, people won’t be able to notice the transplant and most of my grafts fell off by then as they should to make room for my new hair :)
