Hi Tony,
My review is going to be a bit of a mashup as I’m so new to your classes that I don’t have detailed experience with all the facets. So, in the spirit of your setting a 10-minute practice minimum here goes.
I’m a 64-year-old male who took up the guitar for the first time about 20 years ago. I’m not an innately talented musician and I thought, based on comments of others such as a piano teacher I had when I was a young kid, that I might be tone deaf. I’m not as through time I’ve discovered that I can hear when individual strings are slightly out of tune or when the intonation changes as I move cords up the neck. Most of my family has some significant musical ability. I am experienced with interacting with the physical environment and, in particular, with any sport or recreation that has to do with water. I grew up surfing and now whitewater kayak and also surf sea kayaks. I’m also a hand tool wood worker and mechanic and have well trained and almost ambidextrous hands with decent finger independence. My day job is a scientist and I’ve been dabbling in cognitive bias and communications as one granddaughter is a communications major in college.
I like any kind of live music and am especially moved by the risks and corrections made by live musicians. My favorite genres tend to be those with a syncopated grove like salsa, flamenco, Irish fiddle music, some African styles, Hawaiian slack key, samba, Lenine’s Brazilian fusion like “Jack Soul Brasileiro” (check it out on YouTube). Oh hell, just about any kind of music including old timey, blues, and bluegrass if they slow it down some (Billy Fingers being an exception as he plays at speed well).
Mostly, I’ve learned from books and video as I’ve had a lot of work and family responsibilities and the outdoor things that I do to shed stress take up weekends and require that I work out. It also been really hard to find good instructors and even harder to find those with teaching times that I could make. I’ve learned Carter-style flat picking and base runs with some crosspicking and a few lead runs. I can also fingerpick in accompaniment style, some basic Hawaiian slack key, a bit of blues finger picking, as well as some true Travis picking. Recently, and what I consider one of my greatest successes, I learned the percussive hybrid fingerstyle that Ed Sheeran uses on “Thinking Out Loud”. That took me a long time to get the mechanics down and I don’t yet have it up to speed but I can carry the grove. I’ve been working on learning the fretboard using the CAGED method and pentatonic scale patterns linked to CAGED such as major and relative minor.
I’d describe myself as one of those who makes sporadic progress and then goes dormant for a while but I always look forward to picking up my guitar again. My goals are to learn to play with other people and accompany my kids and grandkids. I own a nice Guild dreadnaught and a Taylor 314. Both have exceptional tone. I also own a Taylor Academy 12e which I modified by adding a Taylor Mini pickguard. It is my favorite guitar because it is sooooo comfortable with the beveled lower bout and the shorter scale neck. It has decesnt sound for the price and the electrics also give me honest feed back about how clean I’m playing and I pair it with a AER Compact 60/4 Tommy Emmanuel 60w Acoustic Combo Amp.
So, back to TAC. I think your method is a great addition and I’m happy that I subscribed. I went through the First-30-days lessons in two days just to get familiar with your teaching methods and web site. It took me about two weeks to get consistent with the daily lessons and I did the strumming 101 series.
I really appreciate the way that you have built in ear training, physical training, fretboard knowledge, basic skills, and musicality into the lessons. Last week’s classes in D and dropped-D provide good example. The Monday warm up worked on finger independence of the ring and little fingers in particular. We then moved on to the single string D scale in dropped D which pared a droning D note on either the standard D string or D tuned low E string with the WWH-W-WWH (major tetrachord, whole tone spacer, major tetrachord) pattern of a major scale, D in this case. So, we got ear training, scale training, fretboard knowledge, and up the neck position training all in one brief lesson without a lot of words - brilliant. We moved on to a D lick and then to single finger power chords. The power chords challenged the strength of my hand and I have some suggestion below about that.
Some additional observations. In your marketing you use every trick in the cognitive bias book to get your target audience to sign up. I get why you do it but it was a bit wearisome to the point where I almost blew off signing up. The intros for each session are also a bit tiring but once I got past the intros I was very happy with the lessons up to where I am. All of that could have been just my sensitivity and just wanting to get on with it.
Two technical observations:
1) It would be very helpful to occasionally put the weekly lessons into the context of a song, even if it was just a couple bars of a song.
2) Your really need more on developing a sense of string touch, finger independence, and strategies for choreographing finger movement. You do a bit of that in your CGA chord progression and string targeting. Bruce Emery does a nice job of explaining strategy in his “Guitar from Scratch” series. In fact, his whole guitar series is the best that I’ve found. YouTube links are below but the books cover left hand strategies in more detail. Also included below are links to Jamie Andreas’ work on developing your fingers and hands without hurting them. This is the best stuff I’ve found on this topic. While I find Jamie’s communication style to be irritating, her lessons have been extremely helpful in learning what to do. Using your pop vernacular, lets call it “Live Long and Prosper” after Spock’s Vulcan hand sign which splits the fingers into two groups forming a V. It took me a while to master that but the method was the same as Jamie teaches.
