John Pedder x John Smedley. We are delighted to have partnered with Sheffield-based wood carver johnapedder on the design for our seasonal knit this year. While wool is a world away from the robust materials John is usually working with, he is familiar with this tactile fibre. "My grandmother, mother, auntie and daughter are, or were, skilled knitters, so the clacking of needles has been with me for as long as I can remember," he says. "It means so much to have my work translated into knitwear. Knitwear and woodcut printmaking share the need to simplify things and interpret what is essential to a design." This year we have partnered with Sheffield-based wood carver johnapedder to create a seasonal knit that aligns with our ethos of longevity — one that has just the right amount of novelty to feel special at Christmastime and right through winter. John hand-carved the design on an old floorboard discovered during his tour of Lea Mills. In his own words, using our factory floor as the starting point was a meaningful gesture of craft that "roots the collaboration… into the very fibres." It also pays homage to the "rich heritage" of John Smedley, says John, who was moved by the notion that workers from across the centuries have walked through these old passageways. Whimsy yet wearable. Sheffield-based wood carver johnapedder spent three days hand-carving the enlarged jay motif for our festive sweater into an old factory floorboard from Lea Mills, which was then turned into an intarsia pattern by our in-house knitters. "The carving was scanned into our design software," says Jess McGuire-Dudley, Deputy Managing Director at John Smedley. "Our knit programming team was able to manipulate the design so it could be knitted authentically, even including the imperfect lines of the hard carving,” she says. "They were able to mimic the cuts of the knife using a completely different medium, guided by different craft skills," adds John.
