I've always been fascinated with the idea of "scent beyond the bottle" and in particular fusing scent with sound. So when audio engineering firm kef.eu approached me a year or so ago to see if there was any way that I could use their speakers in my work it was an opportunity too good to pass up. So of course I said "yes but not as you make them..." thus was born the idea of a "scent speaker" - a device which would use music to push scent out to the audience.
So after a year of working on it, I am excited to say that we will finally present our speaker in its first public trial this Sunday 28th of January at 4.30 pm at thecbso for an opera entitled ‘re_creation’ by Haroon Mirza outputs_av. The final two image shows a prototype of the speaker.
‘Re_creation’ is a sound installation and performance in which sculpture becomes set, instrument and lightning design. Complete with light, scent, smoke rings and art musicians, attendees experience the piece by moving through the space for a full-body sensory encounter in which everyday low-end technology such as lightbulbs and used turntables have been reworked by Haroon Mirza to make his sculptures. For this opera we have created a rich woody scent which we call Monastic Decay. An olfactory symphony composed of a diverse array of contrasting scents intertwined in an ethereal, abstract balance, where fragrant echoes of frankincense, myrrh, and olibanum resinoids gracefully drift over the aged and weathered hardwood pews of an abandoned church. Damp Portland stone walls covered with traces of moss provide a background to this composition.
I’m very proud to be part of the stellar team of talent which have come together for this project. But of course especially to Jack, Alex, David and Mica at KEF for helping to make the idea a reality.
