Today our founder, Tarlach de Blacam, is the first maker on stage at making_in, a cultural programme connecting international leaders in making across creative disciplines. Making In is hosted annually by josephwalshstudio in Fartha, County Cork.
Every Inis Meáin garment is made on our small Atlantic island - a place that has shaped our knitwear for almost five decades. From the beginning, Tarlach and Áine de Blacam carried our collections to the world’s most discerning boutiques, establishing a reputation for considered design and exceptional quality.
We decided early on that we would never mass produce. While the island has always been our inspiration, our resources are limited by its shoreline. Tarlach and Áine’s son Ruairí, and his wife, Marie-Thérèse continue to tailor a company that best suits making on the island, in micro-batches of continually evolving designs, inspired by our unique Aran Island location.
Each garment blends heritage with modern technique: machines adjusted by hand throughout the day, hand-finishing completed with care, and hand-crafted details refined to last. The result? A piece that feels singular, connected to its makers - and one you’re unlikely to see twice.
Designed, made and hand-finished in our Inis Meáin workshop, the only knitting factory in the Aran Islands, Ireland.
