Living on an offshore island with a population of 180 people has its challenges. But overcoming these challenges brings a deep level of pride and joy - achieving against the odds. The fact an Aran Islands GAA Club exists in the first place is already an achievement... the total population among the three Aran Islands is only around 1,300 people. There is a mile of sea between each island and 13 miles of sea to reach the mainland where most of the matches take place. The commitment from the players, their families, the voluntary coaches and helpers is huge. ⁠ ⁠ At Inis Meáin Knitting Company we are proud to continue our support of the Aran Islands GAA Club - CLG Oileáin Árann by sponsoring jerseys for the first ever underage girls teams over the last two years. A brand new yarn composition for Autumn/Winter 2025 is our in-house blend of superfine Merino and Linen. The linen serves to make the garment more airy and breathable and creates a beautifully nuanced colour-shading effect as the Linen strands catch the light differently to the Merino. It also creates a depth of feel and texture with little bursts of crispness scattering amongst the Merino softness. We'd like to share with you an homage to Druid Theatre Company in their 50th Anniversary year, marking an exceptional contribution to Irish culture. As Inis Meáin Knitting Company prepares for the same milestone in 2026, we reflect on a shared Galway heritage of creativity, craft and connection in our Island Diary. From Druid’s windswept landings to perform in Inis Meáin to the global stages they have graced with plays inspired by the Aran Islands, the two companies are knit together both professionally, personally and in their values and vision.⁠ ⁠ To mark the occasion, we have reimagined a timeless piece: the Undyed Alpaca Moss Rib Druid Sweater, modelled here by Druid lead actor Marty Rae. For each Druid Sweater sold in 2025, €50 will be donated to support Druid’s next act.⁠ ⁠ There's still a chance to catch a little Druid magic in Dublin and New York before the end of this year. Bréidín is the Irish word for tweed, and a century ago handmade tweed vests were a staple of the island tailor. The Bréidín stitch creates a wonderful lofty texture giving warmth without weight, while offering distinctive colour and stitch interest emulating the subtle nuances of tweed fabrics.
