October on the farm is one of the best times of year 🌾🍂 The rice fields are golden, the light is soft, and the evenings call for a glass of wine under the pines. Our apartments are open until mid-month for guests who want to slow down and experience the rhythms of the Maremma.

Tune in to the latest podcast episode of Pacific Time pacifictimepodcast — What if growing food didn’t have to destroy the planet? Our own Ariane Lotti—who traded Capitol Hill for muddy boots—shares her journey from U.S. environmental policy to reimagining rice farming here in Tuscany. It’s a lively conversation about the lessons Italy and Europe can offer the West Coast, from regenerative practices and biodiversity to the surprising role ducks can play in the rice fields. 🦆
Traveling in Italy this fall? On October 1st, Outstanding in the Field returns to Tenuta San Carlo in the Maremma. It’s one of the best seasons to visit — warm days, golden fields, and the sea still close at hand. Guests from around the world will gather at a long table set between rice fields and pine forest to share a meal that celebrates the flavors of the season and this unique corner of Tuscany. 📸 yesterdayhere

It’s September and it’s still summer in the Maremma. My daily coffee routine hasn’t changed: I slip into town early, order a caffè shakerato with just a splash of milk, and sit outside with the local paper before the farm day begins. By mid-morning, I’m back among the rice fields, checking on the plants as they flower in the late summer sun. A little ritual that anchors me before the work and heat of the day. ☕️

Pastiera is one of our favorite recipes, and we’ve long loved Emiko Davis emikodavies version. Now our own chef, Gemma, has created one using our Olga organic carnaroli rice — and our breakfast guests can’t stop raving about it.

The blackberries have arrived, sprawling in wild brambles along our sandy paths. A little sweet, a little tart — just enough to stain your fingers and make you forget what time it is. Whether you eat them on the spot or save them for dessert, blackberries are summer distilled into perfect bite-sized pieces.
Some days here begin with a farm tour and end at the beach. Others start in the shade of the pines, searching for blackberries, and wind down with dinner under the stars. August at Tenuta San Carlo isn’t planned down to the minute — it’s a season for slow rhythms, sandy feet, and whatever nature offers that day.
