February 1st marks the Pagan festival of 'Imbolc', Brigid's Day, the beginning of Spring, and ushers a new season of hope and growth after the harsh winter. Brigid is a goddess of Pre-Christian Ireland. She appears in Irish mythology as a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann.
I learned about Brigid in school from a young age, where we would honour her by making her traditional cross from rushes on February 1st and hanging them up to act as a symbol of protection for the home. We also learned of 'her deep blue cloak' which in hindsight, must have subconsciously inspired this piece. The 'Cailleach' Patchwork Cape, 2023.
This February 1st will be a very special day as myself and various other designers will celebrate this icon in design bringing some of our Irish culture to designmuseumdanmark. Designer alisonconneely and anthropologist so_sara_o will host a conversation on folklore, mythology and fashion as a vehicle for social change as well as showcasing their tapestry 'Ascension' from their cross- disciplinary project 'Hail Thee We Come: In Reveries of Change'.
Thursday February 1st 16:30 - 18:30
Design Museum Denmark, Bregade 68, 1260 Copenhagen K
