I met some nice Rwandan students who asked for a photo during my visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial kigali_memorial.
If you look closely, you can see part of the sign behind us "Kwibuka25", which means "to remember" in Kinyarwanda, the country's official language. Referring to 25 years since the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. #kwaibuka25
Ethnic violence broke out in Rwanda on April 7, 1994, after President Juvénal Habyarimana of the country's Hutu majority died in a plane crash, along with Burundi's Hutu president. "Hutus said that Tutsi rebels had shot down the plane as it had approached Kigali's airport."
Killings began within hours. About 800,000 Rwandans (mostly Tutsi) were killed.
This is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
As much as we like to travel to see beautiful landscapes and take "pretty" photos for IG, its also important for us to understand the history of a country that may not always be the easiest to learn about. This was one of the hardest tours I've been on, and photos are not allowed to be taken inside out of respect. But If you head to my stories I was able to take some photos where I was allowed.
I urge you to visit kigali_memorial to learn more about the genocide. For more information on how you can help and donate, visit https://www.kgm.rw/donate/ #kigaligenocidememorial #rwanda
