We had so many opportunities to view bears, and we were able to experience very close encounters with several of them! One highlight: We were really hoping to see the COYs (Cubs of the Year). Our fingers were crossed, but our expectations were low. As we approached a ridge, our Expedition Leader instructed us to be as quiet as possible so we could carefully peek over. As we did, there they were: Mama Bear and her two cubs, just 30 feet away! At first sight, the cubs sat up on their hind legs and leaned against their mother, waiting to see what she would do. She looked over at us, then calmly went back to eating, signaling to her cubs that there was no threat. They followed her lead and resumed eating. That’s when I truly understood what it means to be in the natural habitat of these incredible creatures—undisturbed, raw and wild. In addition to the epic bear-viewing opportunities, I also loved the homestead tour.
