Massive Winter Storm Forecasted for Quail Country There is a significant winter storm stretching 2,000 miles from New Mexico to Maine slated to drop freezing rain, ice, and snow across “Quail Country.” Freezing rain could approach 0.5" to 1.0" in spots, especially illustrated in red (Major Impacts) & purple (Extreme Impacts) outlined in the Ice Accumulation map. Snowfall is expected to reach Major Impact levels as well. These areas are in red on the Snow Accumulation map. Snowfall totals of 6" to 10" will be likely across the central U.S. with even higher amounts of 12" to 18" possible closer to the Northeast. This will be a prolonged storm lasting from Friday evening through Monday. This storm will also bring record cold temperatures through Tuesday morning. We can’t control the weather; however, we can control the quality and quantity of habitat on the landscape for our beloved birds. Learn how you can help mitigate the impact of severe weather with improvements to the wildlife habitat on your property by contacting a Quail Forever Farm Bill Biologist using our Find a Biologist map at https://quailforever.org/Habitat/findBiologist.aspx Thanks to Southwind Plantation for this weather and wildlife update.

Quail Fact Friday - Gambel's quail thrive in arid desert conditions by adapting their winter diet to include green foods that provide both nutrition and moisture. This adaptation helps them go long stretches without free-standing water, a critical survival trait when temperatures drop but deserts remain dry. PHEASANT FACT FRIDAY - With the first deep snow or ice storm, people start to worry about pheasants starving. But death due to starving during inclement weather is extremely rare if they have adequate winter habitat. The worst storms last only two or three days, and pheasants are quite comfortable spending three days without food. Let's say the birds have just finished breakfast when a blizzard hits. All the food they have eaten will be utilized in three to four hours, then they must start using body fat to keep warm. Fat constitutes more than 13 percent of a pheasant's January weight. This is enough to support a non-feeding pheasant for three days. If needed, muscle tissue could then be burned for warmth for another 10 days. Rooster Road Trip Connects Hunting, Habitat, and Public Access     The crew hunts one of our Build a Wildlife Area projects where we opened up a land-locked parcel to create more than 1,000 acres of public access. We’re also joined by Marcus Sanders, PF & QF Farm Bill Biologist out of Manhattan, Kansas, for a conversation well beyond limits and bird counts. The guys talk prescribed fire, habitat restoration, and why programs like PF & QF’s Build a Wildlife Area are some of the most important tools hunters have to protect access long-term. There’s plenty of hunting talk mixed in with conversations about dog work, honest misses, and the kind of laughs that only come from road-tripping.   Listen now at the link in our bio or wherever you get your podcasts.     “On the Wing Podcast” is proudly fueled by @proplansportingdogs
