For nearly four decades, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has been one of America’s most successful conservation tools. It has restored millions of acres of wildlife habitat, improved soil health and water quality, and strengthened rural economies across the country. CRP is also a critical part of the farm safety net, giving farmers and ranchers the flexibility to manage risk, generate reliable on-farm income, and protect their most sensitive acres. But with CRP authority set to expire at the end of September, Congress must act now to strengthen and modernize the program. Lawmakers need to hear from people like you who care about farming, wildlife, and rural America. 📣 Tap the link in our bio and make your voice heard today! #quailforever #thehabitatorganization

Quail Fact Friday! Research across the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains and Southern Cascades has found a surprising relationship between severe fire and mountain quail occupancy. Studies show mountain quail numbers peak within 10 years after a major fire. This boom is likely tied to the regeneration of shrubs that quail rely on for food and cover. But fire isn’t the only factor. Regional population dynamics, influenced heavily by weather, also shape quail occupancy. To better understand these patterns, scientists are turning to large-scale acoustic monitoring programs that track the connections between quail, forest structure, fire severity, and time since a fire has occurred. The lesson? As wildfire dynamics shift, some species will lose and others will win – and for mountain quail, high-severity fire can open the door to better habitat. Transforming a Golf Course Into Habitat Wesselman Woods is a nature preserve in Evansville, Indiana, home to the largest tract of old-growth habitat in any U.S. city. Its habitat that has remained intact for more than 400 years and provides refuge for a variety of iconic American species. Now, thanks to the QF Indiana conservation delivery team and local Quail Forever and Pheasants Forever chapters, members will help establish early successional habitat on a newly purchased section of the property. The 23-acre section recently acquired by Wesselman Woods was formerly a par-3 golf course. It will soon be converted to early successional habitat. Southwest Indiana Quail Forever Chapter 3172 is contributing volunteer hours and the use of its seed drill to plant the acreage with native pollinator species. Will Primos, Truth, and Giving Back // Outdoor legend champions conservation with Purdey Shotgun Set donation In 2012, when Will sold his company, he ordered the first of a remarkable five-gun set from the world-renowned gunmakers at James Purdey & Sons. The first gun was to be a 16-gauge, in homage to his father's beloved 16-gauge A.H. Fox, a shotgun Will owns to this day. "It became clearer and clearer," Will says, "that giving back to conservation was the purpose of getting that set of remarkable shotguns." Will is donating the Primos Purdey Shotgun Collection to be auctioned, with proceeds to be split among five of the nation's leading conservation organizations: Quail Forever and pheasants_forever, official_nwtf, ducksunlimitedinc, rmef_official and congressionalsportsmen. Rock Island Auction Company will offer the Will Primos Purdey Collection as the centerpiece of their Premier Firearms Auction on December 5-7, 2025, at their Texas facility, the finest brick-and-mortar auction venue in the world. The collection has been valued at just shy of $1 million. Read the full story at the link in our bio. #quailforever #pheasantsforever #thehabitatorganization

Quail Fact Friday! September begins the “fall shuffle.” While it sounds like a hit dance move, for bobwhite quail it means the dispersal and mixing of summer broods. Quail populations are generally at their highest this time of year, with abundant resources and successful brood rearing. Birds from several different broods combine to form the coveys we will pursue behind our favorite bird dog in the coming months. Coveys have an average of 12 birds that will stick together throughout the winter. Listen closely in the morning and you might hear a covey call as quail prepare for the season ahead.
