Nobles County volunteers achieve incredible milestone with 50th public land project! The same Minnesota county where the Pheasants Forever public lands journey began almost 40 years ago is now home to its 50th successful acquisition project. These dedicated supporters have created nearly 4,000 acres of public access! Volunteers and supporters gathered recently to celebrate the dedication of Pheasant Run 50, a 42-acre addition to the Ransom Ridge Wildlife Management Area (WMA) complex. The parcel expands on the existing 413-acre public area and is about eight miles southwest of Worthington in Nobles County. Most of the property was formerly in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Pheasant Run One, also in Nobles County, was the first Pheasants Forever public lands project in the nation. It was dedicated in 1986. Nobles County Pheasants Forever has been responsible for acquiring 3,752 of the approximately 5,400 acres of land open to public hunting in the county in less than 40 years. Pheasants Forever and Partners Dedicate 1,300-Acre Carp Swamp WMA Addition Officials, supporters and area residents recently gathered to dedicate the Paschke Family Tract addition to the Carp Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The 1,300-acre property was purchased by Pheasants Forever (PF) through the Build a Wildlife Area® program and was recently conveyed to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources “In terms of total acres this is one of the larger projects we’ve ever done,” said Sabin Adams, PF’s Minnesota state coordinator. “It’s an amazing property that will support important species and provide recreation opportunities for the public, fitting squarely within our mission of public lands acquisition.” “It's truly amazing what can be accomplished when people are committed and dedicated to a cause. Take that commitment and add in some strong partnerships, and we have the Paschke Tract. This was really a great day,” said Minnesota Sharp-Tailed Grouse Society President, Mike Chalich. Pheasants Forever will be working with the DNR to restore 27 acres of existing cropland to a diverse mix of grasses and forbs on the north unit this summer. During the winter, plans are to remove 622 acres of brush over both the north and south units of the acquisition. Some of the cut brush will be used to fill approximately 2,000 feet of ditching. #pheasantsforever #thehabitatorganization

Quail Fact Friday! July is brooding season for bobwhite quail across the Midwest. Adult quail brood by covering their chicks with their body and wings, creating an umbrella to keep chicks warm, dry, shaded, and hidden from predators. During the first few weeks of life, this is done throughout the night to help with temperature regulation. It is also used to shelter chicks from precipitation, wind, direct sunlight, and predators. Adults also use soft calls to keep their chicks close while foraging, ready to gather them at the first hint of danger. With less than half of chicks surviving to winter, July is a critical month for broods to have quality habitat for shelter and food. Quality habitat creates more quail. #quailforever #quailfactfriday #thehabitatorganization

Pheasant Fact Friday! It’s common during the summer to see a hen with two broods. But if you see this, know they are not both hers. The physical toll nesting and rearing takes on hens makes it physically impossible to hatch a second brood. However, they will readily adopt broods. If you see a hen with two broods, they’re typically three to four weeks apart in age, which is another clue that she has taken some orphaned chicks under her wing. Even if the hen hatches her first brood and immediately started another nest, four weeks is not enough time to hatch again. #pheasantsforever #pheasantfactfriday #thehabitatorganization

Great news for hunters in Pennsylvania! On Wednesday/Today, House Bill 1431 was signed into law by Governor Josh Shapiro which fully repeals the longstanding prohibition on Sunday hunting across the state. This will provide more opportunities to build memories, harvest wild game, and participate in the conservation system that hunters support and help fund – particularly for those whose busy weekday schedules limits hunting to the weekends. On behalf of our Government Affairs team, thank you to our members and supporters for helping to advocate for this change!
