INSPIRING CHANGE | Last Friday, 9th August, eight of our students had the incredible opportunity to attend the 2024 EcoERC Sustainability Conference at Edmund Rice College. Alongside peers from various schools, they delved into the world of sustainability, starting with an insightful seminar by a representative from the Flame Tree Food Co-op in Thirroul. This community-run organisation champions sustainability by promoting local, organic, and seasonal food, emphasising the importance of shopping waste-free and ethically. Our students were deeply inspired by their advocacy for environmental challenges and sustainable practices.
During the event, students engaged in a thought-provoking survey, encouraging them to reflect on their daily habits both at school and at home. They also got hands-on at a beeswax wrap workshop, where they created a sustainable alternative to plastic wraps and connected with students from other schools.
A highlight of the day was the Q&A session with author, architect, and TV presenter Costa Georgiadis. This session offered sustainable ideas to implement both at home and in our school, whilst also exploring ways to initiate conversations about sustainability around the College, such as designing engaging sustainability posters, encouraging edible gardens, and improving our recycling programs.
This conference has not only deepened our students' knowledge and commitment to environmental stewardship but also equipped them with practical strategies to make a positive impact in our school community.
Thank you to Year 11 students Aleya Carr and Rawaan Matar for sharing this experience with us!
