NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK | This National Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land on which we stand. We acknowledge the Wodi Wodi people of the Dharawal nation and pay our respects to Elders past and present. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Some highlights from Our Week: Monday Morning we were honoured to have Uncle Peter Button welcome us to Country and lead us in a smoking ceremony as our St Mary’s community came together. This powerful start set the tone for a week of meaningful engagement and learning.
Throughout the week, students engaged with reconciliation-focused content across various subjects. In maths, we explored counting in Dharawal, and in Religion lessons, we delved into Aboriginal spirituality. These activities helped deepen our understanding and respect for Aboriginal cultures.
The girls participated in an art class hosted by Tahlie's grandmother, creating individually designed earrings. This was part of our ongoing efforts to promote and embed Aboriginal culture into our school community through art.
Lunchtime students gathered to watch "Satellite Boy," an Australian adventure drama about a young Aboriginal boy striving to maintain his heritage in the modern world.
During assembly a special segment called "Ask Aunty," featuring Aunty Munya and Karla Rogers from the Evolve community. They shared insights about the importance of reconciliation and this year's theme, "Now More Than Ever."
Our Year 12 Cultural Captains, Tahlie Murphy and Hannah Makotsvana encouraged everyone to reflect on what reconciliation means to them and how they can advocate for positive change. As Tahlie and Hannah emphasized, reconciliation involves understanding our history, fostering equality, and working together for a better future.
Thank you to everyone who participated and engaged with Reconciliation Week. Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive community.
