UNEARTHING INDIGENOUS WISDOM | Year 11 Earth and Environmental students are currently learning about how rocks can be classified by the silicate level or the way they were formed (igneous, metamorphic of sedimentary). One of the syllabus dot points asks students to “investigate methods of classifying rocks and minerals used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples”. They have learnt that the key principle to this classification is by purpose and how each rock could be used. In this activity students had the opportunity to prepare paints using rocks that would have been easily accessible to Aboriginal Peoples.
