WOMEN IN PHYSICS | Yesterday our Year 12 Physics class and selected students from year 9 and 10 attended the Women in Physics Lecture by Dr Karen Livesey, a Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Newcastle, and an Associate Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low Energy Electronic Technologies. She has been named a Superstar of STEM by Science and Technology Australia for 2023-24. Karen spoke to the girls about opportunities in Physics, how career and the work she is currently focused on which is designing new nano-sized magnets to address a range of challenges. She explained the use of these magnets in treating inoperable cancers by heating the tumours from within the tumour to improve health outcomes. The girls asked great questions and enjoyed the engaging talk by Dr Karen Livesey. #WomeninPhysics #DrKarenLivesey
A DAY OF CULTURE, LEARNING AND CONNECTION | Yesterday, St Mary’s was thrilled to host “Celebration of Indonesia Day”. It was a remarkable occasion, we were honoured to welcome over 15 distinguished guests, students and representatives from various Indonesian organisations including Indonesian Consulate General, Pak Vedi Buana. Indonesia Day aims to foster cultural exchange, promote language learning, and strengthen the bonds between our College and our Indonesian neighbours. The Indonesian Consulate General, Bapak Vedi Kurnia Buana, and Consulate Cultural Consuls conducted workshops and activities that showcase Indonesian culture. These include playing the traditional 'Angklung' instrument, creating batik art, sharing folk stories, and demonstrating 'Pencak Silat' martial arts and cultural dance. Our students also participated in a range of authentic language activities, allowing them to apply their Indonesian language skills in real-life situations. A delicious Indonesia lunch was provided and students enjoyed a variety of entertaining Indonesian games and trivia. A wonderful day had by all! #Indonesainneighbours #Culturalexperience #IndonesianConsulateGeneral #Culturalharmony #Internationalmindedness #crossculturalunderstanding
