When I lived in Santa Monica, I went to True Food Kitchen several times a week and never had a bad experience. Unfortunately, my first visit to TFK was a rough experience. The first thing we noticed when waking in the door tonight was that the entire left side of the restaurant where we sat smelled like dirty bar mats. Unfortunately, I know this smell well from working in and around bars in college. The waitress was informative and friendly; however, we rarely saw her when we needed something. For example, I had to go to the bar twice to refill our waters throughout our meal. We ordered three items: the Tuna Tostada, Lasagna Bolognese and the grass-fed burger. The lasagna was the star of the show. Absolutely delicious. The tuna was where it started to go downhill. Half the tuna was pale pink, and the other half was dark in color, a common sign that it was on its way out. The burger was ordered medium rare and arrived medium well. They were quick to offer a replacement, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, after waiting close to 20 more minutes, the replacement arrived even more overcooked than the first. Typically, I would assume the kitchen was overwhelmed, but the restaurant was far from busy.
Since other reviews are positive, I'm hoping tonight was an anomaly, and we can give it another shot.
