A little background on myself: I've been a photographer for many years but needed a refresher course on studio lighting and using monolights out in the field because I recently invested in a set of wireless studio lights. After working as a staff photographer for a health care company for years, I am setting out on my own and one of the services I want to offer as a freelance photographer is really nice and well lit environmental portraits for local artists and artisans here in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I stumbled upon Karl Taylor Education after searching on google and YouTube for "lighting environmental portraits". I am so glad that I found this site! It is exactly what I was looking for. Karl offers a wealth of experience and knowledge, sets up practical tests, demonstrations and real world situations to teach a wide range of photographic lighting skills AND post-production editing skills. So far I have watched the videos about environmental lighting in various tricky spaces and settings, and I am about halfway through the class all about lighting theory and using various studio flash setups and modifiers. I feel like I am in good hands and for the price of $19 per month this service is well worth it! When I initially signed up I thought, "what the hell, I'll try it for a month and at worst I'm out $20". The little bit of experience I have with this service so far tells me I'll be subscribing for the foreseeable future because it feels like having access to this site and being able to go back and re-watch things later would be a very valuable tool to have in my arsenal, and the monthly rate seems very fair. Not everyone is able to impart information in such a user-friendly manner. Karl is a great teacher! I also feel like I have barely scratched the surface of what is offered here, as Karl and his team also offer live classes and assignments on a regular basis, as well as critiques of student work and prompt responses to questions and requests for help. It's a great site and I highly recommend it.
