We had a great anniversary trip! Whym nailed it. We got to brew our own beer and had a sunset picnic at the beach. We also got to go to a concert at House of Blues and a local comedy show. Just a few of the fun things they planned for us. It was so nice to not have to plan because we are terrible at making decisions on vacation. Highly recommend it!
Sisters on bday roadtrip (Fri-Sun). Picked “scenic route” & “Green Acres is the life for me” on the survey.
The day before, we rec’d a text telling us how far we wld be driving (5.5-6 hours) & asked what time we planned on leaving so that they could plan the big reveal (7 am). 4 am day of trip, we rec’d a text that we were heading to the Hilton Richmond Downtown in Richmond, VA with a link to On A Whym’s Richmond overview. The most generic overview we ever read! (Richmond has buses/airport/museums/history/food/souvenirs). NOT one specific tourist attraction was mentioned!
We were disappointed that we were going to a city but assumed we’d enjoy our “green acres” on the surprise part of the tour.
At 11:30 am, we rec’d a link to our itinerary which showed 10:30-1:00 as “Check Out Baltimore.” ---- WE REC’D THE ITINERARY AS WE WERE PASSING THE LAST BALTIMORE EXIT! (We left home 2 hours later than we told them -- the timing was way off!)
Dinner our first night, they suggested a James Beard Award-nominated restaurant-delicious but looked like an old take-out place w lopsided chairs/tables (no ambiance) & the slowest staff ever! After dinner, we went axe throwing. (This was a suggestion for our second night.) It was a lot of fun.
Day 2 suggested Jewish deli for breakfast, shopping for books/vinyl records & seeing State Capitol before our surprise @1:15-4:00. (We’re NYers! We want to try something southern! & survey did not say shopping!)
Saturday 9:30 am we recd text w receipt for wine tasting ($15/pp). Text said: You’re going to wine tasting in boutique winery w incredible scenery in a gorgeous old house. We got you two wine tastings on us!!! --- (“On us”–we paid for this tour to inc a surprise that you only spent $15/pp on!)
Winery was almost an hour from hotel! --- (1) We had already spent 6 hours in the car on the way to Richmond the day before & (2) Who wants to DRIVE to a wine tasting???
After breakfast, we toured an historic house/garden (a suggestion for departure day).
We hired an Uber to go to the winery ($50 tip/one way!) and when we discovered the winery was in the middle of nowhere(!), booked the same driver to take us back to Richmond.
There were NO gardens/grounds/scenic views like the description said. The main building was cute outside but extremely rundown inside w slanting floors & the sink falling off the wall in the only bathroom! The tasting was in a cute barn but the cold wind came in around the closed barn doors! (November, remember?!) The pours weren’t even big enough to taste the wine! The wines were pre-picked (no substitutions) & the staff were slow with the next tasting. Since we travelled to get there & had a designated driver(!), we bought a bottle of wine to share. It was mediocre at best.
We hit traffic on the way back & missed our 6:45 dinner reservation. We ate at a great restaurant a local woman told us about & went to see a live band at a bar (found by googling).
Day 3 (departure day) mentioned going to several places that had outdoor tables to have some wine, (Again with the drinking & driving & outdoor tables in November!!!), stopping at a winery on the way home, (More drinking & driving! 26 minutes away! Why didn’t they send us there the day before??), & visiting St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty or give me death speech.” We chose to go to the church & learned about history & the city of Richmond. (Too bad we were on our way out of town!)
On our way home, we decided to look into the Baltimore suggestions that we missed on our drive down. The diner they recommended was no longer in operation & the observation tower in the park was closed due to Covid!
We were under the misconception that On A Whym wld provide us w specific things/places to do/see with current, seasonal info. Their info was extremely generic or just google “Things to do in Richmond” & almost all texts had grammatical/typing errors (very unprofessional)!
There were a few good ideas but overall we would not recommend On A Whym’s services.
We had a wonderful time. This was a total surprise all the way, all the time. We did experience a few unexpected hiccups but they were resolved immediately. Made me a bit uneasy at times. I loved the whole Mothers Day adventure.
The vacation was fantastic. Whym did an excellent job planning and executing all the details. It was so much fun. We will gladly use their services again!
They are AMAZING! From the small details, surprise events and the customer service - it was truly incredible how much they are able to organize and make a trip unforgettable. I cannot wait to schedule again! Highly recommend.
