Black Student Forum is dedicated to promoting cultural, intellectual, political, and social growth throughout the Boston College community while challenging the community to experience the many elements that create the black experience! Established in 1970, Black Student Forum welcomes and encourages all identities regardless of their race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or any other identity.  In this regard, we encourage all students who support the lives and experience of Black students on campus to join our community, attend our events, and express their comments and concerns throughout the year. #BC2024, today we will be highlighting the Montserrat Office. Rooted in the Ignatian and Catholic mission of Boston College, the Montserrat Office serves students with the highest levels of financial need, helping them become active participants in their Jesuit education, while aiding in their academic, social, and spiritual formation. Its mission is to provide students with access and support to all areas of student life not incorporated in a financial aid package. The Montserrat Office continues to grow and work to build a more just and welcoming community for students of all economic backgrounds at Boston College. It currently serves about 2,200 Montserrat students, which constitutes roughly 15 percent of the undergraduate student body.

#BC2024 I’m Leo, one of your Orientation Leaders this summer, and I’m happy to introduce you to the Undergraduate Government of Boston College. This organization consists of passionate students who work to enrich the lives of their peers on campus. UGBC has several divisions that all serve the purpose of making BC a home for all students. Various groups of students meet to discuss and tackle problems on the topic of race, sexuality, gender, disabilities, and more. Divisions of UGBC, such as ULA the Undergraduate Leadership Academy, are also great for freshman and upperclassman, because you can get a mentor during your freshman year and also get to BE a mentor yourself once you’re an upperclassman. I am very grateful for the communities within BC that UGBC has given me the opportunity to connect with on a deeper level, and I’m really happy to call so many individuals here friends! Mexican Association of Students (MAS) is a cultural organization that fosters and promotes Mexican heritage and culture through both its members and the general BC community. MAS organizes events throughout the year to illuminate and teach the student community about current and past international and national Mexican issues.

I was drawn to BC because of its meaningful, purpose-driven educational philosophy: “Setting the world aflame” and “being men and women for others”. I sought an interdisciplinary education driven by more than just career readiness and preparation; and I wanted an experience that would help me to develop as a whole person - intellectually, academically, and spiritually. When I arrived at BC though, the transition was tougher than I imagined it would be. I constantly compared BC to my previous school. I missed my old friends, struggled to find “my group” right away, and felt like I hadn’t found my place. Being a transfer meant starting over and adjusting to everything again while everyone else had had a head start. I found myself quickly losing sight of why I had transferred in the first place. Patience and confidence were what helped me get to where I am today. Finding peace and happiness at BC took time - I didn’t find it overnight. I shouldn’t have compared myself to others who had found “their people” already - after all, most of them had already been here a year. I also grew to become more confident: confident in my choice to come to BC and in myself; my personality, my goals, my journey.
