Pheasant Fact Friday!💡
Are the terms standardized, progressive, extended, special, and/or private used to describe your pheasant season? Definitions may vary from state to state. A “standardized” season does not change from year to year. Yours is standardized if its opener, length, and bag limit have remained the same each year, even though the pheasant population has increased or decreased. A standardized season often eliminates the political squabbling of changing the season each year. A “progressive” season changes the daily bag limit and/or possession limit during the season. Progressive is allowing 3 birds a day for the first 2 weeks, then allowing 4 a day for the remaining season. An “extended” season simply adds days to the normal season. If the state feels more birds need to be harvested (due to unusual weather or late crop harvest hindering hunting), the season may be extended. If the season ends, it can be reopened (again due to less than desired harvest) as a “special” season. This season brings out more hunters than a simple extended season. Everyone likes another opener. If your state allows Private Shooting Preserves, such operations usually have their own “private” season lasting longer and with larger limits than your season.
