Sporting Dog Shorts Fueled by Pro Plan Sporting Dogs - Tough Feet, Tough Dogs: A Veterinarian's Guide to Foot Care Sporting dogs are elite athletes. Their foot health is just as critical to their job as their heart, lungs, or nose. Unfortunately, the dog’s paw, despite being quite tough overall, is a potentially vulnerable spot for injury and overuse. Cracked pads, torn nails, interdigital sores, and even punctures can quickly sideline an otherwise healthy dog. A dog that begins limping on day two of a five-day hunt from trashed pads isn't just an inconvenience or a source of sympathy—it’s a sign that your preseason foot preparation regimen may have fallen short. The truth is simple: feet that can stand up to the rigors of fall are earned by getting in reps during summer. Back to Earth - Chukar Hunting Oregon's Owyhee Canyonlands For most of this walk, Sturgil had seemed uninterested, likely because there were no birds for a mile, whereas the last three days he'd been running through country rank with chukar scent. But finally, here on this sage flat, there were birds. Sturgil was on a point that said birds were in front of his nose, maybe touching his nose. It was a point that the sheer presence of birds petrified him. It was a point I almost didn't want to breathe around at the risk of knocking the dog over. Sturgil was in front and above us, facing back down our way. The canyon was at our backs and that meant that the birds were between us and the dog. We were perfectly positioned. Visit the link below to read the full story and learn more about what Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are doing to ensure the Owyhee continues to support both wildlife and the people who cherish it. https://pheasantsforever.org/back-to-earth #pheasantsforever #quailforever #thehabitatorganization

Pheasant Fact Friday! In July and August, hens must find cover with adequate insects to support their chicks. This can be weeds, grass, sweet clover, small grain stubble and much more. Many hens are also found near tree and shrub cover. Woody cover doesn’t offer as many insects for the chicks to eat, but it is very valuable to the brood as shade during hot weather. The hotter the weather, the more pheasants will use woody cover. Pheasant Fact Friday is sponsored by Irish Setter Boots #pheasantsforever #pheasantfactfriday #thehabitatorganization

Montana Grouse Part Two: Sage and Sharp-tailed Grouse The smoke from distant fires hung low, suspended in the hot air over the plains — which is a reminder that September in Montana can bring a number of challenges. It’s the same boots, the same dogs, but a whole new rhythm. Out here, the land humbles you in a different way. This is Montana prairie grouse, and the last stop before our long journeys home. Presented by onX Hunt, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are proud to share the final episode of this two-part series featuring Montana's incredible upland landscapes. Pheasant Fact Friday! During the summer, the chick's diet continues to differ from that of an adult bird. Insects comprise considerably more of the chick's diet, while seeds make up more of the adult's diet. Around 36% of a chick’s diet is made up of insects in July and August, compared to 10% of an adults diet. Low availability of insects during this time is one factor in the high mortality of chicks throughout the summer. Nature also provides a supply of protein in foxtail and wheat. In July and August, small-grain harvest is at its peak, and waste grain is everywhere. Foxtail and wheat make up 52% of the chick's diet at this time. In September, both adults and chicks will shift from wheat to corn as the fall harvest begins. Pheasant Fact Friday is sponsored by Irish Setter Boots. We want to thank them for supporting our conservation mission and for designing boots made for the most demanding upland hunters. #pheasantsforever #pheasantfactfriday #thehabitatorganization
