Pheasant Fact Friday Protein digestion supplies the amino acids necessary for pheasants to build and maintain good body condition. While corn is a major part of the October diet, it is only 8.8% protein, while wheat eaten early in the year contained 14.1% protein. As this shift in diet occurs, pheasants have to make up for the decrease in protein intake. Luckily, during October birds consume more weed seeds than at any other time of year — which can contain more protein and fat than commercial cereals. Sunflowers and foxtail are some of the most highly consumed, and help offset the diet transition. Which means the wild sunflowers in the roadsides last June that were mowed or sprayed could have helped your pheasants get ready for this winter. Public Access to Habitat Program Expands to Michigan Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever (PF & QF) are proud to announce the Public Access to Habitat (PATH) program has expanded to Michigan. Working in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and onX Hunt, PF & QF’s Michigan PATH initiative aims to add 2,000+ acres of high-quality upland habitat to MIDNR’s Hunting Access Program (HAP). “We’re excited to bring PATH to Michigan while demonstrating how this program can be tailored to any state,” said John Laux, PF & QF’s permanent habitat protection program manager. “Michigan PATH will allow Pheasants Forever and its partners to better leverage our funding, target high-quality grassland habitat and increase public hunting opportunities across Michigan’s core pheasant range.” Read the full story here: https://bit.ly/4q4ntk2 #pheasantsforever #thehabitatorganization

Is there any scene better for it than spreading that rooster’s tailfeathers to the golden glow of the autumn sun’s last rays? We capture the magic on the cover of Fall’s PF Journal, your annual Pheasant Hunting Issue: It’s (almost!) all pheasant hunting, all the time. If your membership is current, you’re golden. Pheasant Fact Friday! In August, pheasant chicks are starting to grow their second set of feathers. Their down feathers at hatching, called "natal plumage,” is replaced with dull, brown feathers called the "juvenile plumage.” After hatching, pheasant chicks immediately begin growing flight feathers, and are capable of short flights at two weeks. In August they begin their “post-juvenile molt,” which will give them adult colored feathers by Fall. The hen starts this molt after her chicks hatch, and will complete in October. The rooster will complete his change in August. Pheasants lose only one wing feather at a time, and are never flightless. Most ducks, on the other hand, lose all their wing feathers at once.
