If you take out a new hunter, you could win a prize! 🏆 🦃 Minnesota DNR and Pheasants Forever are inviting Minnesota hunters to take the Hunter Mentor Pledge. Spring turkey season is the perfect opportunity! Here's a story from Ryan, a previous participant of the pledge: "In 2023, my wife and I took my sister-in-law, Alexa, turkey hunting for the first time. It was her first hunt. After one day of turkey hunting she was hooked, and three days later she shot her first turkey. After the hunt we went back to the house and fried up some wild turkey cutlets for lunch. We plan to hunt again!" 🔶 After submitting a short recap of their hunt together, Minnesota hunters and those they mentor will have the chance to win a custom, limited-edition prize from Pheasants Forever. Learn more and take the pledge: pheasantsforever.org/mndnr 📸 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Pheasant Fact Friday! The rooster’s breeding territory may be as small as one acre or as large as 75 acres, depending on the number of other roosters. With more roosters and a smaller territory, he may be so busy fighting neighbors that it interferes with breeding. As the season progresses, territory size will decrease, with the rooster spending more time with his harem. The rooster starts gathering his harem in early April. The crowing and beating of his wings reaches peak intensity in mid-April and continues through May. Crowing warns other roosters to stay away, and says to the hens, “I’m one loving dude.” #pheasantsforever #pheasantfactfriday #thehabitatorganization

Pheasant Fact Friday! The diets of the rooster and the hen diverge in March and April. Whereas the rooster’s diet changes little from January to June, the hen’s diet shows marked changes, particularly in mineral components. The hen’s diet contains six times more calcium than the roosters in April, 14 times more in May and ten times more in June. This May peak in calcium occurs during peak egg-laying. Corn is a good source of vitamin A, but a poor source of calcium. To obtain Calcium, the hen actively seeks calcareous grit. If she cannot find it, she will extract calcium from her own bones for the eggs. #pheasantsforever #pheasantfactfriday #thehabitatorganization
