Partners unlock capital for private landowners, supporting conservation efforts to increase watershed resilience on a landscape scale.
Dirty Hands, Happy Hearts Volunteerism drives the Pheasants Forever mission, and chapters serve as the core of that function. Getting hands dirty side by side. Creating conservation wins on public lands. Building community. Feeling that special and good kind of tired together at the end of the day. Every Hands-On Habitat effort is critical. And while some projects are mighty big, none are ever too small. What will your chapter do for the uplands in 2025? Visit the link below to read six classic stories from the dozens of chapters doing important habitat work during Hands-On Habitat events last year. https://www.pheasantsforever.org/Dirty-Hands-Happy-Hearts #pheasantsforever #thehabitatorganization

Pheasant Fact Friday! When the flocks break up in March, the rooster is at his maximum weight of the year (1400 gm, 3.1 lbs). During a normal winter, he will gain weight throughout the cold months, though this depends on January and February temperatures. The rooster will definitely begin losing weight in April as he displays to hens, fights other roosters, crows and begins mating. As with the rooster, the hen's weight may increase or decrease in January and February depending on temperatures. However, unlike a rooster that reaches maximum weight in March, the hen gains weight through April, and has 30 extra days over the rooster to prepare for raising a family. #pheasantsforever #pheasantfactfriday

Three Ways to Combat Woody Encroachment "A lack of woody encroachment control inevitably leads to compromised grasslands which ultimately contributes to the demise of wildlife species that depend on those grasslands," says Logan Cares, habitat specialist for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. Combating and reversing woody encroachment can be accomplished using a variety of methods. The approaches in this article, especially when combined, can help restore grassland habitat to a more productive state. Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/42fjsxT
Gamebird Gourmet // Roasted Pheasant This recipe utilizes the reverse sear technique, which allows the meat to stay juicy while cooking at a low temperature. The bird is then finished on very high heat to brown the skin. Click the link below for the full recipe and then head to your freezer to grab a couple of birds you’ve been hanging onto since last fall. https://bit.ly/4c3giSi Excerpted from WILD + WHOLE by Danielle Prewett. This story appeared in Winter 2024-2025 Pheasants Forever Journal.
Pheasant Fact Friday! The hen's ovary development will begin the first of April, which is 30 days after the start of the rooster's testicular development. Why the difference? The earlier growth with the rooster stimulates his desire to break from the winter flock, set up a territory, defend its boundaries and display to hens. While the rooster may start the spring breeding season, it is the hen that puts the most energy and labor into the season. The additional 30 days are needed to physically prepare the hen for the breeding season, which has a greater chance of killing her than did the winter season. #pheasantfactfriday #pheasantsforever
