Pheasant Fact Friday!đź’ˇ Winter nights are a freezing 15 hours long, and it is certain the pheasant will be ravenous by breakfast time. The 10 grams of food in its crop at bedtime passed through the crop in four to five hours. When the crop is empty, the pheasant still has 10 hours of darkness until breakfast. During these long nights, the availability of roosting habitat is extremely important to the pheasant. This habitat is the idle grasslands or wetlands cover where birds spend their nights. The quality (thickness and height) of this habitat determines how much energy the birds need to stay warm ... in the same way that the quality of your windows and insulation determines how many cords of wood you will need to stay warm. Without good roosting cover in which to spend their winter nights, the birds must use more fat to survive until breakfast. A couple weeks of cold, 15-hour nights without roosting will kill all pheasants. #pheasantsforever #pheasants #pheasantfactfriday

On The Wing Podcast Ep. 293: New Hunters and New Horizons, is live. Listen now at the link below, or wherever you get your podcasts. https://pheasantsforever.org/BlogLanding/Blogs/Rooster-Road-Trip/Podcast-Ep-293-New-Hunters-and-New-Horizons.aspx This is the third episode of Pheasants Forever’s 15th annual Rooster Road Trip. Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by PF’s Vice President of Marketing Andrew Vavra, PF’s North Dakota Education and Outreach Coordinator Seth Owens, and PF’s Video Production Coordinator Aaron Black-Schmidt to recap the conclusion of the group’s hunt in the Bismarck area and the start of the hunt in the greater Grand Forks region. Episode Highlights: - Vavra provides the play-by-play to the group’s very “birdy” third day of hunting with North Dakota Game & Fish Department’s R3 Coordinator Cayla Bendel. Although there were lots of roosters in the air, Vavra hangs the “missed opportunities” banner over the day following some lackluster group marksmanship. - Owens grabs the R3 baton from Bendel on the fourth day to talk about his effort to pass along the state’s hunting heritage through education events and his stunning photography. Check out Owens’ photography and videography talents on Instagram at @stuff.seth.sees. - Find the companion video accompanying this podcast episode at RoosterRoadTrip.org. During the holiday season, we’re reminded of all we have to be thankful for. As part of the upland community, you understand the importance of our work, what it delivers, and the void that would exist without it. We need more acres of grassland, more birds in the air, and more hunters in the field. From all of us at Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever, and on behalf of the uplands, a heartfelt “Thank You.” None of the work we do is possible without our passionate members, supporters, and partners. Thank you for your commitment. Thank you for your generosity. The uplands are a better place, and have a brighter future, because of you. During this season of giving, we humbly ask you to consider the uplands—what it gives you and what it provides us all. Learn more below on our various ways to give. Happy Holidays! https://www.pheasantsforever.org/waystogive

This is why educating, engaging, and expanding the upland conservation community is one of the four strategic priorities driving our mission every day.
