Quail Fact Friday - In Midwest bobwhite country, snowfalls often cover the seed and grain-rich ground that quail depend on. Birds respond by scratching through light snow to reach seeds or shifting to bare spots created by wind, livestock, or food plots. These open patches are critical feeding areas when snow piles up. PHEASANT FACT FRIDAY - Where can a pheasant find the 504 kcal of energy needed each day to prevent starvation? During mid-winter, corn constitutes up to 77 percent of the pheasant's diet. Corn contains more metabolizable energy than most other food items. Nearly 90 percent of their diet is commercial grains, while six percent is plant foliage and four percent is weed seeds. Trace amounts of insect parts are also found in their daily food intake. Birds can dig food in snow up to four inches deep. But a thin layer of ice can create problems if it doesn't melt within a few days. Hens have more difficulty digging through ice or snow for food, and roosters will take over foraging areas by chasing away any hens. More hens than roosters die during winter months. Leaving a Legacy of Stewardship - Forest Management and Wildlife Conservation in Virginia Over the last decade, Danny and his son Curtis transformed 77 acres of dense Virginia woods into thriving pine savanna habitat for northern bobwhite quail, bringing back the calls that once faded from the land. With guidance from habitat programs like Working Lands for Wildlife, they opened sunlight to the forest floor, restored native grasses, and rekindled a connection to family heritage and stewardship. Their work now supports quail, songbirds, deer and more while creating a place for future generations to explore, hunt and care for the land. Read the full at the link in our bio. Today, Secretary Doug Burgum issued a Secretarial Order to expand hunting and fishing access on lands and waters managed by the Department of the Interior (DOI). As part of the Order, Secretary Burgum affirmed the Department’s policy that public and federally managed lands should be open to hunting and fishing unless a specific, documented, and legally supported exception applies. Designating DOI managed lands as “open unless closed” will remove regulatory barriers and increase alignment with states, tribes, and territories, who have the primary authority for wildlife management.
