Pheasant Fact Friday Suddenly the first winter storm arrives. The misty rain turns to ice and covers every twig and blade of grass, changing to snow by evening. A hen's food supply may be unreachable for two days. However, her body fat can help. By the first of December her body fat is 9% of her weight, or about 98 grams. This is enough canned energy to keep her warm for nearly 3.5 days. Of course she will be hungry when the blizzard passes, but she will survive. November blizzards have the least effect on birds, as at this time they have ample fat, and the ice and snow will probably thaw to free food supplies. Quail Fact Friday During especially cold weather, bobwhite quail huddle even closer together to share body heat. Where they choose to roost also helps them stay warm. You’ll often find evidence of roosts on southern slopes at mid to low elevations where the afternoon sun has warmed the ground and winds are lowest. Woody cover provides the greatest warmest, so having covey headquarters readily available is extremely important in the winter.
