PHESANT FACT FRIDAY: Did you know? Since the summer, pheasants have shifted their diet to meet higher winter energy needs. Grains like barley, wheat, and oats now make up only 3% of their intake, while corn peaks at 77% in December, offering a third more energy than small grains. Weed seeds and insects decline sharply in early winter where wild sunflowers drop from 9% to 2%, and insects from 16% to 2%, mainly as dead remains. Now that native plants and insects are dormant across the Midwest, what are bobwhites eating? From October to March, their diets shift from protein rich insects and greens to high-energy seeds. Frequently consumed seeds include ragweed, foxtail, grains, and seeds from native forbs and grasses.
