So we arrived on a windy day with a barge on the beach and diggers moving sand. We wondered what idyllic location we thought we had arrived to. This supply chain is their life line and without it, we wouldn’t have experienced what we did very the next 7 nights.
From the moment you step foot on the beach, have a welcome drink and Tiki explains the snorkelling directions, you feel yourself exhale.
Our initial garden Bure, then the beachfront Bure, couldn’t be more picturesque. Both beautiful and a welcome reprieve from the humidity and heat. We spent 7 beautiful nights sleeping on a super comfy bed and listening to the waves lapping
The food - everyone says you’ll enjoy it. We did. I have caeliacs and I could eat pretty much everything. The options are extensive, with breakfast buffet and a menu to order from, a large lunch menu and a 5 course dinner. Every day. We ended up sharing one main between us in the end - you won’t go hungry. Not as much fresh (raw) fish as we had hoped, but in the peak of summer, keeping fish cool isn’t really possible.
The environment - sandy, cared for, lovingly raked multiple times a day, the grounds are picture postcard worthy. The yurts, tropical gardens and yurt pool a different setting from the beachfront pool, palm trees and decking.
Activities are well thought out and worth their money. Village visit, cave trip - snorkelling underwater between caves, the singing at the resort, crab racing, trivia night…. You can be as busy or as idle as you want. Massages, yoga, walk the hill, Kokoda making, the whole island experience.
The hands down winner about this place is the beauty. The lagoon, the reef, the nature, but mostly the people.
They knew our names, we knew theirs. The management team treat their employees like family, celebrating achievements, upskilling them with trips overseas to learn skills like Japanese cooking. The staff in return treat visitors like family. I have never met a kinder, more genuine, grateful and humble bunch of people. Employing locals from the 4 villages on Nacula island, they are driven home by boat at the end of the day, or they stay at the resort and work for a period of time before returning to the mainland for a week or so.
From backpackers to families and older people, the resort caters for everyone.
We left a large piece of our heart at blue lagoon. We wouldn’t change a thing.
As a note, we stayed on the mainland for 2 nights after our stay here. Mainland Fiji is not Fiji. We went from outdoor showers, to indoor tiles, lagoon to pool, staff who know your name and welcome you warmly to being just another customer on the mainland.
Bula vinaka blue lagoon. We will be back. My perspective on life and what’s important has been changed forever.
