If you want a calmer "Island escape," this is the place!
We sought a more cultural experience with great beaches, unique food, and snorkeling. I will break those categories down and then, at the end, talk about lodging and some additional information.
~Cultural Experience
One of the options that the resort offers is to visit the nearby village. Some of the staff members come from this village, and it was a fantastic experience! I would advise you to bring money for the opportunity to donate to the school as well as buy something from the market that they set up. We got the sweetest hugs from a couple of Fijian babies that held our hands until we left the village. In addition to the village visit, the staff puts on a Kava ceremony and sings songs every night except for Sunday, where you can mingle with others staying at the Blue Lagoon. They put on some dancing shows and sang choir music on Sunday. It was great exposure to Fijian culture.
~Great Beaches
The picturesque white sand beaches lined with palms must be taken from this location. There's a good distance that you can walk up and down searching for seashells during low tide. The resort provides a beach towel, and you can use sun chairs in front of the dining area that are first come, first served.
~Unique Food
I had zero expectations going into the meal plan, but it was surprisingly good! I hear this is the best food on the Yaskawa chain, and I tend to believe it. Breakfast is a standard American breakfast with non-American portions. Lunch has some unique items, but you can choose a burger. Dinner is more formal. It is a five-course meal with almost every dish tasting incredible. I never felt hungry or unsatisfied. (I did not have withdrawals from the American portion-sized meals that I had been used to)
~Snorkeling
They offer diving and certification for diving if you want to spend the money. The snorkeling, I felt, was incredible, with a Finding Nemo reef right when you walk out. I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU TAKE YOUR OWN MASK. We rented theirs for the first day, and the lenses were scratched. We brought our own set, which saved our experience! You could get away with using their flippers if you want to save luggage space. We did the night snorkeling, which was an amazing experience as many sea creatures come out at night. The guide (Bill) was great at pointing out the cool wildlife. We snorkeled every day and found something new every day. We saw a total of 3 sea turtles, a small reef shark, Sting rays, and a sea snake. None of which were threatening as we kept our distance.
~ Lodging
Since we booked late, we could not book one of the Villas and ended up with a lodge and a shared bathroom. We are ok with shared space, but if you are honeymooning or like your own space, then book a villa. The lodges are not climatized but have a fan that keeps the temperature down for us. It would have been too warm in the afternoon to nap there, but why not nap on the beach?
~Additional Info
Internet - From my understanding, the Villas have their own internet connection, which is more reliable. The only place that internet was available was at the dinning area.
Cave visit - Many people said they likes it. We have been to the Cenotes in Mexico so we did not think we would see anything different.
Additional Expenses - The snorkel trips, village visit, cave trip, and diving cost more. You simply confirm which bunk/lodge/villa you are staying in, and at the end of your stay, you can settle your bill. Coffee and adult beverages cost more but also will be billed to your room. We ended up spending about $500 more. It costs $100 American Dollars to travel from Nadi to the Blue Lagoon and takes 4 hr. 15 min. to get there on the Yasawa flyer. If you want to spend the additional cash, you can take a helicopter ride. We may do this next time for a different experience and to give us time to explore Port Denarau and its shops.
I hope this review helps, and we hope to return soon with the kids this next time!
