Buyers under 18 BEWARE! I was traveling back from the Albany airport a few weeks ago and decided to stop and buy my son the car he’d been eyeing for about a week (a surprise for him, of course!) . The following day his mother (my ex-wife) took him over to pick up the car and I got a phone call from my son saying they wouldn’t title it in his name because he’s not 18. First of all, he currently has a car titled and insured in his name in Massachusetts. The dealership put Anna on the phone with me and I asked if she was sure about this… she told me it’s a New York state law. Folks, that would mean no one in New York owns (titles) a car under 18?!?! Second, they titled the car in my ex-wife’s name and told him it would be easy to fix this at the registry. Third, they put his plates on the car in New York and he drove the car all weekend in his mother’s name. When he got to the insurance company on Monday they told him he couldn’t register the car in his mother’s name and it wasn’t insured all weekend. After doing my research, the “under 18” is a dealership policy if they choose, NOT A STATE LAW!!! I ended up having to drive back over to put the car in my name Tuesday night. My son should have NEVER been able to leave that parking lot uninsured!!!! If anything would have happened to him, Anna would be working for me now! The place is a laughing joke, nothing but a bunch of shady, ignorant people. On a positive note….. Bob my salesman, was a pleasure to work with.
