My husband and I had lunch at True Food Kitchen at their private, pre-opening event, and we were not disappointed. When the restaurant was being built, it looked modern and clean - this held true. The building, both inside and out, is clean (in design and actually clean), modern, and has nice touches that fit in with their clean eating/health food vibe. Each table has an adorable little succulent on it, which I loved.
We were seated outside - the patio is very nice - I was concerned it might be too loud given their parking lot location, but it was fine, we could have a nice conversation without shouting.
We started off with a few beverages - their wine list looked great, but I went for a cocktail - the Cherry Bourbon Sour to be exact. The bourbon flavor was great - I won't lie, until I double checked the description just now I forgot it had a pinot noir floater on top, but that makes sense - the drink was bitter and tart with sweet following right behind. It had just the right bourbon taste to it (I don't want my throat to feel like it's on fire, but I want to know I'm getting what I paid for!).
For an appetizer, we took our wonderful waitress's (more on that later) suggestion and went for the Kale Guac. The combination of the grapefruit and the poblano peppers yielded this topsy turvy spicy sweet flavor that was simply amazing. Definitely loved the citrus touch to balance out the spice. One of my favorite guacs ever.
But speaking of favorites, the Grilled Fish Tacos. Everything about these was a winner. I could literally eat these every hour of every day and be happy. The fish was meaty and filled the tortilla. The sauces and accompaniments worked in harmony to really highlight the fish. The flavor explosion was simply the best. We both agreed we would get these again and again and again.
We also shared a Poke Bowl...I thought it was okay - a bit heavy on the snow pea and in all honesty, I'm not a quinoa rice person - I knew this going in and still appreciated the dish. The salmon portion was very well-sized. The avocado could have stayed on the vine for a few more hours, but the flavors did all marry together well. I probably wouldn't do it again, but I didn't hate it, I just didn't love it, especially in comparison to the Grilled Fish Tacos (hearts).
Lastly, we tried two of the dessert options - Key Lime Pie for the hubs and Flourless Chocolate Cake for me. The Key Lime Pie was spot on - I'm pretty sure the dessert chef flew in from Key West with the limes this AM. It was tart, texture was great, and it was just everything it should have been. The flourless chocolate cake was very good, as well. We weren't crazy about the cocoa nibs (a few were bitter), but the cake itself paired with the delicious ice cream and caramel? Amazing! Can't even tell that all the desserts are vegan!!
Now, this was a special event, so I wasn't expecting anything less, but the staff was phenomenal- service was great, everyone had sparkling personalities, and we really enjoyed our time at the restaurant. We don't get to go out sans children too often, and this was the perfect lunch date spot. We'll definitely be heading back for the Fish Tacos more.
We were quite happy with our experience, have already talked about going back, and I took a peek at the kids menu...I think our twins will be happy, too. Plus our waiter recommended the tomato and watermelon salad, so we have something to look forward to trying next time we go!
