I was referred to AO tax by a friend. I decided to give them a try.
Pros:
1. Whatever they did, I ended up saving about $300 compared to other tax filing services. REad about the flip side of this savings under "Cons"
Cons:
1. COMPLICATED PROCESS: Download forms, fill them out, scan them, upload to AO tax. Someone reviews, and if all is good a draft tax filing document is sent out, which you again must download, sign, scan and upload. Expect the overall process to take about 3 days, from initiation to final filing
2. INACCURATE: AO Tax is not exactly thorough with their tax filing. In my case, I saved about 300 dollars but that savings came back to haunt me. I received a notice from the tax department for a deduction claimed which was a result of incorrect filing by AO tax - they only considered the cost of the car I bought but not the tax I paid for it. When I filed a correction, I had to pay about $200 as additional sales tax on vehicle purchased out of state and brought into this state. Considering AO's high charges for tax filing, the additional $300 that they saved me was nullified, plus the headache of dealing with a tax notice.
3. POOR RESPONSIVENESS: AO tax will not respond or help you out if you receive a tax notice after filing. I sent Monica from AO tax several emails to help me respond to the tax notice I received, but they did not respond to any of them. I had to call Monica, who gave me lame excuses for not responding in time and told me to handle it myself and call the Department of Revenue to find a resolution.
4. CHARGES: Almost double of what TurboTax would have charged me
NO, I would not recommend AO Tax. The next tax filing season, I will recommend my colleagues to not go with AO Tax.
