Road Trip XVI Ep. 3: BAWA Bobwhites Rooster Road Trip continues with a stop at one of our Build a Wildlife Area projects where we opened up a land-locked parcel to create more than 1,000 acres of public access. In this episode, the crew rolls into northeast Kansas to dig into what makes public ground actually work for bird hunters. CONNECT WITH SPRING’S PF JOURNAL Rare indeed is the PF Journal cover with people on it. That’s changing with Spring’s edition. Matt Addington’s soulful cover shot of Shea-Lynn and Luc Ramthun at their Flying J Farm captures the essence of the PF Mission. Habitat. Wildlife. People. Working lands. Soil and water quality. Teaching the next generation. It’s our lead story for The CONNECT Issue. Then we travel across country exploring other ways PF is connecting habitat, people, conservation and public access. Make sure you sign up or renew at the link below by January 27 to get the Spring issue and get connected to, or back to, the PF mission. https://bit.ly/4bYQG9l -Tom “Carp” Carpenter, Editor 📸: Matt Addington Creative
PHEASANT FACT FRIDAY - Where can a pheasant find the 504 kcal of energy needed each day to prevent starvation? During mid-winter, corn constitutes up to 77 percent of the pheasant's diet. Corn contains more metabolizable energy than most other food items. Nearly 90 percent of their diet is commercial grains, while six percent is plant foliage and four percent is weed seeds. Trace amounts of insect parts are also found in their daily food intake. Birds can dig food in snow up to four inches deep. But a thin layer of ice can create problems if it doesn't melt within a few days. Hens have more difficulty digging through ice or snow for food, and roosters will take over foraging areas by chasing away any hens. More hens than roosters die during winter months.
