Pheasants Forever Acquisitions Add 268 Acres of Upland Habitat to Minnesota Public Lands Three recent strategic acquisitions by Pheasants Forever in Minnesota have expanded on existing public land complexes. The parcels have been conveyed as either Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) or Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs). In addition to Pheasants Forever chapters, partners and members contributing through the Build a Wildlife Area® program, major funding for the projects was acquired through Minnesota’s Outdoor Heritage Fund, administered by the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council. To all the chapters, volunteers and supporters who made Hands-On Habitat Month a success THANK YOU! Over one hundred events involving thousands of participants across 19 states were held with one goal in mind – making a difference for conservation. Just because Hands-On Habitat Month is over doesn't mean the work has to be. It is always a good time to get together with friends and hunting buddies to improve the habitat around you. Hands-On Habitat month is supported by onX Hunt #pheasantsforever #handsonhabitat #thehabitatorganization

Pheasant Fact Friday! For the hen and the chicks, the best possible situations is a successful first nest. Re-nesting costs energy – the hen must again increase ovary size, produce one egg a day, fill a nest and incubate it. This is energy she should use to raise chicks, grow new feathers and build body fat. When winter arrives, re-nesting hens have less body fat than first-nest hens, making it harder for them to survive cold conditions. Chicks from a re-nest also have less time to grow and go into the winter smaller and not as fat. #pheasantsforever #pheasantfactfriday #thehabitatorganization

Tick Talk The list of tick-borne illnesses that can affect dogs is as long as the names are difficult to pronounce, but there’s a handful that deserve most of our attention. Lyme disease is the leader in both familiarity and frequency, but Anaplasma, Ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever are also very common in the US — increasingly so in recent years. Visit the link below to bone up on your knowledge of tick borne illness and learn how to better protect your dog this spring and summer. https://bit.ly/3Fu5Xmy #pheasantsforever

It's National Wine Day and we found it fitting to celebrate with some of our favorite game bird dishes and wine pairings. Both bird hunting and wine making require a deep connection with the land. What wild game and wine are your pairing today? Pheasants Fact Friday! The average hen incubates 10 to 12 eggs. At first, she supplies all the heat to maintain eggs at 107 degrees. This gradually diminishes as the embryo develops and increases its own heat production. Eventually, the hen’s function is to insulate the eggs, protect them from predators and rewarm them after and absence. Incubation requires 22 percent of the hen’s heat production. The longer the hen sits on her eggs, the less likely she is to abandon or be forced off the nest. Because of this devotion, mowing or swathing farm fields during later stages of incubation can destroy many hens. #pheasantsforever #pheasantfactfriday #thehabitatorganization
