Today marks 40 years since President Reagan signed the 1985 Farm Bill into law, which was the start of the Conservation Reserve Program we know and love today! What started as a way to help farmers prevent topsoil erosion has become an excellent tool for generating wildlife habitat, protecting water resources, and helping farmers’ and ranchers’ bottom line. A lot has been accomplished in the last four decades that is worth celebrating, but there is work to be done. With the third year of a Farm Bill extension, funding for CRP remains at risk. Celebrate CRP’s birthday by telling your legislators how important this program is to farmers, conservationists, and hunters.
