Pheasant Fact Friday!πŸ’‘ The chicks produced last spring will stay with the hen until they are 10 weeks old, then start moving off on their own. Like your own children, their independence grows with adolescence, and they soon leave home. The hen is now free from the demands of raising her young and can start caring for herself. It is time to start preparing for winter. The first thing to happen after the young are gone is the expanding of her home territory. When brooding her chicks the hen used 37 acres around her nest, but by September her territory doubles to 71 acres. It is unknown whether this expansion is caused by her increased energy demands. #pheasantsforever #pheasants #pheasantfactfriday

From the Mountains of Laos to the Prairies of the Midwest - Pheasant Fried Rice by Chef @yiavang70. Read the full story and watch the accompanying recipe film, that was featured in the 2024 PF & QF Journal Super issue, at the link in our bio. β€œOne of the first dishes my father taught me was fried rice. It is a simple dish using cooked rice and most any protein. How about pheasant? Or any other white-breasted upland bird for that matter. One of the simplest ways of cooking breast meat from a bird or two is to have it be part of the fried rice dish. In our family it is about taking a little and having it go a long way. The lean meat is perfect for the high intense heat of the wok, and the flavor of the meat will go very well with the mix of the fish sauce and soy and also the fresh herbs added at the end.”

On The Wing Podcast Ep. 281: The Prairie Grouse Primer, Hunting Tips, and Game of Battleship, is live. Listen now at the link in our bio, or wherever you get your podcasts. Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Pheasants Forever Editor Tom Carpenter and Quail Forever Editor Ryan Sparks for a conversation with professional dog trainer Clyde Vetter, who also happens to be husband to PF & QF President and Chief Executive Officer Marilyn Vetter. Each member of this conversation also considers themselves prairie grouse hunting junkies, so they provide a forecast for the 2024 sharp-tailed grouse and greater prairie chicken hunting season and weave their hunting tips into a game of Prairie Grouse Battleship. Episode Highlights: - The group plays four rounds of β€œPrairie Grouse Battleship” in which each participant provides a fresh hunting tip for sharpies and/or chickens in hopes of scoring points for tips the other competitors don’t have on their lists. - This episode marks the introduction of the brand new β€œPremium Moments in the Field” stories from @grainbeltbeer Premium, β€œThe Pheasant Friendly Beer.” - Check out the state-by-state prairie grouse hunting forecast at PheasantsForever.org/Primer presented by @sportsmansguide
