On The Wing Podcast Ep. 284: Creating Public Lands with Biologist Matt Holland, is live. Listen now at the link below, or wherever you get your podcasts. https://quailforever.org/BlogLanding/Blogs/Quail-Forever/Podcast-Ep-284-Creating-Public-Lands-with-Biologist-Matt-Holland.aspx Host Bob St.Pierre visits with Matt Holland, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s vice president of grant development and a wildlife biologist, about the organization’s public land creation efforts in celebration of Build a Wildlife Area Week. The organization first created a public wildlife area in 1986. Since that time, PF & QF has worked on 1,810 different land acquisitions covering 229,846 acres of permanently protected habitat for wildlife. Those acres are now open to public recreation, including hunting. Episode Highlights: - St.Pierre approximates that Holland has played a role in the creation of 100,000 acres of public wildlife areas during his 28-year career with “The Habitat Organization.” In an oddly funny comparison, St.Pierre goes on to equate Holland to being a Swiss Army Knife and how sometimes he must be the blade and other times the toothpick to help facilitate a land acquisition. - Holland shares news of $300,000 in matching contributions to help incentivize donations from listeners interested in becoming “Public Land Creators.” - To learn more about PF & QF’s Build a Wildlife Area program and to get your hands on a new limited edition coffee mug, please go to PheasantsForever.org/BAWA or QuailForever.org/BAWA to learn more.

The word "sustainability" shows up in a lot of places these days, but hunters have been focused on sustainability for generations. Now, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are demonstrating how delivering on our habitat mission provides tremendous benefits well beyond the hunting public - and those broader audiences are taking note. Diverse audiences benefit from this program, and to continue this growth we’re attracting more support from some unexpected places. Our BAWA projects provide quality habitat and preserve our outdoor heritage by increasing hunting opportunities, and they’re also an outstanding sustainability solution. The thing is, our Build a Wildlife Area® program is an incredible success story, but the story is incomplete – at least for now. Our pheasants, quail, pollinators, and other upland wildlife have historically lost so much habitat, the way forward requires us to continue to gain much more ground. Leveraging multiple public and private partnerships, Pheasants Forever was recently able to acquire a 1,300-acre addition to the Carp Swamp Wildlife Management Area. The acquisition adjoins the existing 14,000-acre public lands complex in Lake of the Woods County in northern Minnesota, only a few miles from the Canadian border. Your support helps projects like this come to life. Now through September 27th your contribution to Build a Wildlife Area will be increased X 20 to create more public lands like the Carp Swamp Wildlife Management Area Addition! quailforever.org/bawa To learn more about the recent Carp Swamp Wildlife Management Area acquisition, watch the full film at the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQqugZqazqk

Quail Fact Friday!💡 As we transition into early fall, bobwhite quail begin relying more on grass cover and shrubs to protect themselves from predators and cooler temperatures. It’s a great time to evaluate habitat quality. In farm country, good quail habitat consists of 50% agriculture, 30% grasslands, and 20% shrubby cover that provides escape cover. Diverse native grasses provide both protection and essential foraging opportunities for quail during this season. #quailforever #quailfactfriday #quail #bobwhitequail

Getting to and from your favorite quail spot is just as important as the hunt itself. We want to know, what tires do you trust to get there and back again on the rough roads of quail country. 📸: @briangrossenbacher Image originally featured in the “Everything but the Tailgate” photo journal spread in the Fall 2024 issue of the Quail Forever Journal. #quailforever #quail #quailhunting
“WHY CONSERVATION?” WITH NEVADA STATE COORDINATOR KAELIE PENA Here at PF & QF we have a wide array of talented individuals all across the country working hard every day to deliver our mission, each with unique backgrounds and skillsets. In our new blog series, “Why Conservation,” we feature some of the incredible employees that make up the Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever family. Each of these blogs will highlight background information on the employee, the important work they do for the organization and answer the important question of — Why Conservation? "Growing up, my dad always told me to find a job that involved something I was passionate about, and going into natural resources conservation accomplished just that. Every day I get to work with people who have the same passion I do on projects that are important and meaningful to places that I love. I’m truly thankful to have found my way into this career and for all the people along the way who have guided me down my path." https://bit.ly/3zojVn8
