On The Wing Podcast EP. 195: Counting Bobwhite Quail Populations With Eyes, Ears, & Technology, is live! Head to the link below to listen now. https://quailforever.org/BlogLanding/Blogs/Quail-Forever/Podcast-Ep-195-Counting-Bobwhite-Quail-Populations-with-Eyes,-Ears-Technology.aspx Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by three of the country’s foremost quail biologists to talk about past, present, and future efforts to count bobwhite quail and how that population data is used to create high quality quail habitat, more birds, and better hunting opportunities. Those quail biologists include Quail Forever’s Working Lands for Bobwhite Quail Framework Coordinator Dr. Jessica McGuire, Georgia DNR’s Quail Coordinator Dallas Ingram, and University of Georgia Associate Professor Dr. James Martin. Episode Highlights: -Ingram and Martin explain how bird dogs are used to help count fall bobwhite coveys, while taking fun jabs at each other’s favorite bird dog breeds in the process. -McGuire also discusses how landowners who are interested in fostering higher quail populations on their property can get involved with counting quail as a means of better understanding what factors need to be improved on a particular piece of land. -Martin also talks about how his grad students at the University of Georgia are using new technology to make significant strides in our understanding of quail population dynamics.
To the dismay of hunters and conservationists, Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (RAWA) came to an abrupt halt Monday evening when this landmark legislation was not included as part of the omnibus spending bill. The $13 billion package - spread out over a decade - would create dedicated, state-based funding for wildlife habitat projects across the country targeting more than 12,000 “at risk” species, including bobwhite quail, sage grouse, lesser prairie chickens, bumble bees, and monarch butterflies. “Bipartisan support for RAWA is still strong, but this critical conservation bill did not reach the President’s desk in the 2022 session,” said Bethany Erb, PF & QF’s Director of Governmental Affairs. “We look forward to connecting with new members of Congress in 2023 while utilizing the strong voice of our membership to make RAWA a reality.”

People always talk about quality over quantity, but why not have both? Protecting natural habitat in perpetuity and increasing public land access are vital aspects of modern conservation, but the job’s not done once the land has been protected. You could preserve a gazillion acres, but it won’t do anyone (or anything) much good if it’s nothing but a sea of brome grass. True conservation lies in improving these acres after they’ve been conserved — raising the quality to match the quantity. Read "MAINTAINING PUBLIC LANDS QUALITY AND QUANTITY: WHY HABITAT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS LAND ACQUISITION" at the link below. https://quailforever.org/BlogLanding/Blogs/Quail-Forever/Maintaining-Public-Lands-Quality-and-Quantity.aspx

As Congress works to finalize an omnibus bill to avert a government shutdown, we urge our Congressional leaders to include the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (RAWA) in the final bill language. If passed, the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act would provide states with critically important funding to restore essential habitat and implement state-specific conservation strategies for a wide range of wildlife species, especially ones at risk of population crashes, including bobwhite quail, lesser prairie chickens, and sage grouse. Recovering America’s Wildlife Act has the support of state natural resource agencies and our nation’s foremost conservation groups. RAWA is a long-standing PF & QF priority. Congress, it’s time for this legislation to reach the ground in the form of habitat. #Pheasantsforever #quailforever #RAWA #RecoveringAmericaWildlifeAct
