Quail Fact Friday!đź’ˇ Did you know that the gopher tortoise, the only land tortoise native to the southeast, plays a crucial role in the quail ecosystem? Found in longleaf pine savannas across states like Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, this incredible tortoise digs burrows up to 40 feet long. These burrows provide refuge not just for the tortoise, but also for over 350 other documented species, including bobwhite quail. Habitat restoration for gopher tortoises benefits quail by preserving the diverse longleaf pine forests they both call home. These ecosystems are vital for many species, making the gopher tortoise a true keystone species in maintaining ecological balance. This is just another example of how managing for bobwhite quail habitat benefits a host of other species. #quailforever #quail #quailfactfriday
