“When snow falls over quail country, bobwhite quail rely on winter cover to shelter them from extreme weather. Quality winter cover like plum thickets and stiff-stemmed native grasses such as little bluestem, big bluestem, Indiangrass, and switchgrass are great places for bobwhites to take refuge during winter months. The desirability of these types of cover is amplified when it is located near a food source. In this photo, a highway of bobwhite tracks lead to strips of standing soybeans left behind by the farmer. Soybeans are great for quail as snow accumulates because beans higher on the stalk become accessible to quail.” ✍️📸: Quail Forever Journal Editor @1.ryan.sparks.1 #quailforever #quail #snow #winterhabitat

Today the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced they would reopen enrollment for the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program (continuous CRP). The program will reopen on January 12, 2024 — Additionally, producers already participating in CRP whose contracts expire this year can apply to re-enroll beginning the same day. Learn more about this latest announcement and how to enroll, at the link below. “CRP is the cornerstone of our work to empower producers and landowners in fostering healthy upland bird populations on their properties,” said Ariel Wiegard, vice president of government affairs at Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. “We’re thankful to Congress for extending CRP’s authorization into 2024, and to the USDA for offering timely opportunities to enroll new acres and re-enroll expiring acres in this vital program. CRP exemplifies Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s commitment to a future where wild lands and working lands come together to support life and livelihoods across the country.” https://quailforever.org/BlogLanding/Blogs/Quail-Forever/USDA-Reopens-Signup-for-Continuous-Conservation-Reserve-Program.aspx
Just bobbin’ around! This covey of bobwhite quail was caught on video by QF member @the_unhip_uplander while doing habitat work and invasive tree removal on a property in Kansas. There’s nothing better than seeing the results of habitat work up close and personal. #quailforever #quail #bobwhitequail #quailhabitat

Watch “That’s A Desert Day: Quail Hunting New Mexico” Presented by OnX Hunt and Quail Forever at the link in our bio. “I think the mountain landscape right here in this spot, like so many in New Mexico, deserve respect and attention…I feel like it’s so underappreciated. But it has that bad reputation of poking you and wanting to sting you at every opportunity possible… that’s just a desert day though… So if you’re ready to challenge yourself and your bird dog, come hunt these guys and you will find some fun.” #quailforever #onxhunt #quailhunting #quail #scaledquail #gambelsquail
