Check out our early summer nesting update at the 🔗 link in our bio, which includes observations from several states across quail range. It may be the beginning of summer, but quail hunters know that autumn’s birds are made now. This is the time of year when quail hunters across the nation start cocking their ears for the sound of whistling birds and the sight of paired-up quail along roadsides. Weather and cover are the keys in the spring and summer months, so even as we engage in our summer activities we keep one eye on the weather and the other eye on the cover, hoping for that magic combination that will provide ample birds for making autumn memories. And while it’s very early to be making any predictions about how nesting season will shake out, head to the link for a few quick takeaways from a sampling of states across quail range. #quailforever #quail #quailhunting

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced the acceptance of more than one million acres into the Conservation Reserve Program’s (CRP) general signup. Learn more at the 🔗 link in our bio. These acres, combined with the anticipated enrollment of CRP’s grassland and continuous sign ups, will help offset the 2 million acres scheduled to expire in 2023 — resulting in a net gain in total acres for the third consecutive year. “Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are excited to celebrate another successful CRP general sign up,” said Jim Inglis, director of government affairs for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. “These numbers illustrate continued demand for the program across the country, and we’re pleased to see the third consecutive year with a net increase in CRP acres.” “We look forward to using the momentum generated by this good news as a catalyst for further investment in conservation as we work with our elected officials in Congress,” Inglis said. “Improvements to the 2023 Farm Bill could expand CRP’s ability to provide conservation options — helping to achieve multiple land use goals including increased wildlife habitat, improved water quality, soil health benefits, climate resiliency measures and safeguarding rural economies.” #quailforever #quail #CRP

"I discovered a long time ago that you can learn much about the world around you — and yourself — by quietly sitting at the base of a prairie windmill and watching the day slowly fade. You can learn much about quail, too. You do, of course, also learn a lot about quail from what you observe of them from behind a dog, and along the course of a lifetime pursuing them, I’ve learned plenty that way. But to really get to know quail, to observe them as they go about their daily lives, you must go where they live, and watch them as they live, not just as they flee. And my favorite place to do that has always been under the creaking blades of a rusty, weathered old Aermotor."
