Captain Jeff Warnke and SRO Seth Sullivan spent part of last week at The Alabama Association of School Resource Officers (TAASRO) Leadership Symposium.
This two day, intensive conference hosted by TAASRO brought together experts from around the country to discuss topics such as the importance of maintaining good relationships between School Resource Officers and school officials, targeted school violence prevention, recommendations about how to improve School Resource Officer programs from the National Association of School Resource Officers, and perspective on the Sandy Hook School tragedy from a parent and a first responder from Newton, CT.
Sullivan is very involved with school safety throughout the year. In fact, he is the Vice-President of TAASRO, Region 6 Director for the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO), serves on the Florida Association of School Resource Officers (FASRO) board, and serves on the Alabama School Safety Task Force for the Alabama State Department of Education. Lessons learned at the Leadership Symposium will be used to continue improving our School Resource Officer program and keeping the children of Cullman City Schools safe.

Keeping our schools safe in Cullman is a priority. Today, February 15th, is National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day and we want to thank all of the officers in our schools.
The SRO assignment is unique within the law enforcement profession. These officers fill a three-part role, serving as informal mentors or counselors, law educators and law enforcement officers to support the students and communities they serve. They are valuable and essential members of the education community who deserve unwavering respect and support from the public in the pursuit of keeping schools and students safe.
NASRO executive director Mo Canady said, “We encourage schools and communities to take time Feb. 15 to let their SROs know how much they appreciate the work these officers do to bridge gaps between law enforcement and youth and to keep schools safe.”

Throughout the months of December and January, the Cullman Police Department received numerous reports of burglaries and thefts from storage facilities within the City of Cullman. During the course of the investigation, Sgt. Trey Higginbotham with CPD Investigation Division, identified the suspects to be Tommy Ray Lackey, age 49, of Hartselle, and Charles Christopher Jones, age 40, of Hartselle. Subsequently, Sgt. Higginbotham obtained warrants on Mr. Lackey and Mr. Jones, and both were arrested on numerous felony charges, including Burglary 3rd Degree, Theft of Property, and Criminal Mischief. During and after their arrests, a large quantity of the stolen property from the reported burglaries was recovered, as well as property stolen from other burglaries spanning three counties and several municipal jurisdictions. This investigation remains ongoing and more charges may be filed at a later date.
While a large portion of the stolen property can be traced back to the reporting victims, some of the recovered property remains unclaimed. If you have a storage unit in the Cullman County area, we ask that you check your storage unit and ensure that you have not been the victim of a theft. Should you find that you have, please contact the corresponding law enforcement agency where the theft occurred and also contact CPD, as we may have recovered some of your property that was stolen by these individuals.
** Thank you, Sgt. Higginbotham, for all of your hard work on this case.**

** Cullman Police Department Sponsor Spotlight **
Our introductory Sponsor Spotlight belongs to Merchants Bank of Alabama a division of Southpoint Bank. Merchants Bank has been a longtime supporter of the Cullman Police Department, but in the past several years they have been our sole sponsor for the Cullman Police Department's annual Trunk of Treat. Each year this event has grown and so has their contribution. This last year we purchased more than 50,000 pieces of candy and over 3,00 people attended the event. It has become one of the biggest Trunk or Treat events in Cullman County. Merchants Bank was also one of our sponsors for our employee Christmas dinner this past December and they continue to support numerous other Cullman County Charities through their annual charity golf classic held at Terri Pines Country Club. Thank you to Merchants Bank a Division of Southpoint Bank for your continued support of the Cullman Police Department and our Community Policing Programs.

***Attention Car Dealers***
Please be aware of a current car buying scam. Subjects are using other people's identities to purchase vehicles online or via telephone. The subjects are usually out of state and the vehicles are picked up/delivered to a third party. Please use common sense when selling to an out of state individual and only release the vehicle to the buyer with proper identification. If you have any question that the sale might be fraudulent, please do not sell the vehicle without contacting the Cullman Police Department first. Stay vigilant, take the steps to protect your business and trust your instincts. If you see something that doesn't look right, there's a good chance it isn't.
