Basement Builders is a reno company that specializes in basement finishing/renovating - and it shows. They're very good at what they do, their picture portfolio shows they can do fancy basements with a wet-bar and home theatre, but we wanted plain/functional basement and they were able to do that for less than the 2 other quotes we had.
We had them renovate most of an 1,100 sq foot basement in about 9-10 weeks, with short notice. They did an office/bedroom, den/family room, bathroom, and closed off a storage room and the utility room. Everything looks great, very high quality work, and the subcontractors they use were all very professional. They've clearly done this many times: they have a well thought out process/contract/agreement form, they post signs at the door and lay down floor protector, arranged for us to pick lights, cabinets, paint, flooring, tile, etc at a minimum places (much appreciated!) and were clear about any extra costs. They arranged all inspections, cleaned up after themselves (we were able to move in even before the final vents were in place), walked us through the layout of the walls/electrical/lights/etc and were even able to arrange a dumpster when we couldn't get one on short notice so we could empty the basement.
There's a primary contact so you can ask questions or request changes, if you're unsure they are able to make solid recommendations because they've done this many times (several of their suggestions have already paid off). About the only suggestion I would have is: more regular updates, like maybe a weekly email or text saying "here's what we're doing this week..." as sometimes there were periods when no one was there; also when the initial completion date wasn't achievable the earlier we could be told the better (we'd hoped for 8 weeks) so we could make alternate plan. Overall we're very happy, we would use them again.

Basement Builders are an amazing company to build you basement with! Here’s are some of the positive and negatives we experienced when working with them.
Positives
- Mathew, Don and Ben are amazing to work with! Mathew and Don took measurements and went through floor plan designs for our basement all within the 30 minutes to 1 hour initial meeting we had with them. Don took care of any concerns we had throughout the construction process. He was friendly, professional and very responsive to any questions I had. Ben was amazing at helping us figuring out how wiring, plumbing, outlets, roof height, etc. should be and came by to do a quality inspection after the basement was built to ensure it was up to their standards
- High quality product! A main reason we went with basement builders as opposed to their competitors is that there was a lot of variety to choose from in terms of finishes so you can have a custom basement without breaking the bank. We did go with a few upgrades (upgraded vinyl flooring/upgraded carpets/light fixtures), but this only lead to about a $1,500 difference between them and what their competitor offered. Mind you their competitor had less options and to us the extra bit of money to really make the basement the way we wanted it was worth it.
- They have excellent guidelines that their contractors follow to ensure that health and safety are of utmost importance. On top of that the contractors cleaned up after themselves, there was no damage to our property and each contractor ensured that the house was locked after they were done each day!
Negatives
- Our basement was completed in 9 weeks after their initial estimate of 8 weeks. This wasn’t a huge deal to me. I’d rather take the time and make sure it’s built properly than to rush to finish a mediocre product.
- One contractor did ask to use our washroom twice. I usually wouldn’t care about that either, but this was near the beginning of summer and Covid precautions were running high. I brought this up to Don and he made sure that that contractor knew not to do that again and apologized profusely for it.
Overall I would highly recommend Basement Builders to anyone looking to develop their basement! We were very budget conscious throughout the whole process, but by going with basement builders we were able to get the basement we wanted at a very affordable cost! The selection choices are amazing and really allow you flexibility in terms of what you can get depending on your budget. The basement has been amazing to use and looks amazing!! We’re so glad we decided to build it with Basement Builders!

We decided to finish our basement and went with Basement Builders after 4 estimates. Their technology they use to quote, measure and contract with are top notch. They came in and provided a schematic of our idea, outlined it on their iPad app. On the day of framing the owner came in with the framers and after chalking the outline, we realized it wasn’t quite right. They spent the time to redesign and provide suggestions on the spot and reconfigured the layout.
Their subcontractors are top notch, high quality. This company has invested in their business and secured the best people for the job.
All in all, extremely happy with the result. When there were minor concerns through the process, they were addressed immediately and without hesitation.
On budget, on time, tied to the contract 100%, no surprises, professional, highly recommend. These jobs affect most people’s largest asset, get it done right and professionally, you won’t regret going with Basement Builders... Great experience and really happy with the result.

My wife and I interviewed 4 different basement renovation companies before deciding to proceed with Basement Builders. Our basement renovation project was completed on time (10 weeks form start to finish) and we genuinely believe we made the best possible choice.
We got our dream basement exactly to our specifications for a very reasonable price, with no cost overruns/unforeseen additional costs, built with excellent workmanship and great attention to detail. The sub-trades are respectful of our space and good about keeping the worksite clean. The Basement Builders' owners are quite involved throughout all stages of the project (concept, costing, sub-trade oversight, final walk through) which gave us piece of mind.
I would definitely recommend Basement Builders!

We engaged the Basement Builders to finish our basement during the onset of Covid-19 in Calgary. Although we were slightly apprehensive about starting this project given the uncertainties of the times, the Basement Builders team was professional and conscious of our concerns. They took all reasonable measures to ensure the health and safety of our family and their team. During our initial meeting, we were very impressed with the creative design and layout ideas they provided to maximize the utility of the space. We also appreciated their off-hand knowledge of current codes and regulations which reflected their years of experience in the industry. Ben and Don were fantastic to with and our basement was completed on time, true to budget with quality workmanship. Basement Builders deliver an exceptional product. Our basement was completed 6 months ago and I have yet to find a single flaw of any kind. Save yourself a ton of time and hire the best. These guys replaced beams, re-ran ducting, and all of that aside, they changed how we live in our home.

I wish I could give Matthew, Ben and Don a 100 Star Rating. My experience with Basement Builders was flawless from the moment I called and spoke to Matthew, through to final inspection with Ben. The exceptional advice started when I first spoke to Matthew about the project where he reinforced their commitment to using quality materials right down to the light switches, and went on to explain the nuances of a Mortgage Plus Improvements and how Basement Builders was uniquely positioned to support this. It continued with Don and Ben providing some perfect advice on how to design and layout the floor plan; Don was able to show me on an iPad what the floor plan looked like and made some fantastic suggestions to maximize the developed space while being sensitive to our budget. The quality of workmanship from every single trade was impeccable. I cannot say enough about how satisfied we are! If you don't choose these gentlemen for your project, you are doing yourself a disservice - it's really as simple as that.

We hired Basement Builders based on meeting with Mathew and Ben!
During our experience we were floored with positive answers from both Mathew and Ben! Alongside every contractor that entered our home. Not only were they all professional, they cleaned up after every time they entered our home. We knew exactly when they would be here. No surprises no unknowns.
Each contractor for plumbing, painting, electrical, flooring, drywall was hands down professional and knowledgeable!
Everytime we had a question, it was answered immediately! Everything we discussed happened. We are very impressed with the service and most of all the quality. The wet bar, fireplace, under the stairs development for the children all done immaculately.
Our home is complete and so is the magic. We can say the magic is now fulfilled throughout our home. We are so grateful for Basement Builders!
